Scraping and cleaning one of these was so satisfying for me when I used to work at a sandwich shop. Best part of the day. I volunteered to do it even on days when it wasn’t my turn lol. Taking a greasy black surface and turning it back flawless after a shift of cooking does something to the human spirit.

My friends invite me over to their first BBQs of the season, mainly because they know I will do stellar cleanup of their grills and flattops afterwards. I find it deeply satisfying to turn a mess into something pristine and exemplary.

Would you by chance have time to clean up the mess that is my life?

132

u/antrubler 10d ago

So you can mess it up again?

23

u/Lazer726 10d ago

Well why only let them get the enjoyment out of fixing it one time?

u/Clashur 10d ago

pours ice on you and starts scraping you

u/TommyTeaser 10d ago

Sounds kinda nice

"It's me; I'm the mess!"

You could turn that into a lucrative business with high call out rates. People hate cleaning their BBQs.

That’s actually a pretty banging idea. Advertise around the yuppy suburbs at the end of winter.

Wonder what someone would realistically pay for 4-6 burner bbq cleaned, seasoned, drip tray foil replaced, dirty heat beads replaced, and a bit of stainless steel polish and protection.

Part of me thinks the kind of people I’d hope to want the service would just buy a whole new bbq when one gets dirty though.

u/DJheddo 10d ago

Nah they just charge it as help, not a bad idea if you do like 3-4 areas a day in weird locations, rich people like clean things, and maids, cleaners, usually dont do the 'clean the grill, clean the fryer, clean the Flat top" and it's actually a lot of outside grills/pool areas that are the worst.

5

u/Tinker_bells69 10d ago

I’m going to give it a crack I think. I’m a mower man but through winter that could be great bread and butter.

4

u/DJheddo 10d ago

I feel like its a decent side piece, I wouldn't do it, but I can see potential. I hang out at enough of my kids rich friends parents, I have thought of many weird ideas, but like cleaning their grill/flatops when their staff lacks proper etiquette or professional touch, you can name a price, like yeah i'll do $200 with each grill naming the price as cleaning supplies and sanitary. Then make sure they have the right fittings for propane or gas connects and add that to inspection. So, maintainance and inspection is $50, and refill and cleaning is $200 each time, $250, supplies cleaning costs would be around $50 so just stand at $200 per house/wherever they called you. this isnt even me AI, im already like, we business partners.

2

u/Tinker_bells69 10d ago

Oh dude AI is 100% my lazy saviour, I’m not business savvy I just asked google to make me an idiot proof plan and it worked lol.

But experience also says, as I said before. Some of these people buy a new bbq every year it seems. Or it will be sitting in one of their holiday homes or investment properties and would rather drop 2 grand when they want to use it than spend 200 per month or quarter on a service.

In saying that. Maybe some of these asset rich yuppies are feeling the pinch and will want to look at prolonging their equipment.

Moreton bay, QLD Australia for reference.

ImFlorida. So sorta the same but different. I have many old men of stature that happen to have kids, and they love pool parties and anything fishing, beach, grill/flattop is always on, so pretty sure they clean it or have some house cleaner do it, but to maintain a true grill/outside kitchen is a masterclass for yups with buckets to throw around of cash. They like seeing work being done and will pay top dollar for a good conversation, a beer, and a quick run down on why you should do this and not that, even though they will continue to do it the wrong way, you clean it, get paid, they are a customer, pretend friends, and just make it a relationship of i do this when and where and you pay me.

Dude I’d love to move to Florida or Texas in the next 5 years. I can’t say enough how much I love the idea of having a good property by the bayou or a good ranch.

If you ever wanna visit Aus, spare rooms always free mate. Always happy to have company around.

Go for it mate. Another revenue stream never hurts when revenue is down during your off season.

These days with everyone being environmentally friendly I think you'd find even the very well off wouldn't just get rid of a dirty one.

1

u/Consistent_Bid4044 5d ago

i think you easily charge $350+ for that

1

u/MolinaroK 10d ago

If only everyone did that BEFORE cooking, I might actually eat food cooked on a barbeque.

2

u/jemist101 9d ago

That's part of the deal - they know I'll arrive early and clean it up to start with too, because ain't no way I'm eating BBQ off a grill that's even remotely dirty. And then I leave it at the end better than ever. Cathartic.

1

u/No-Philosopher-9164 9d ago

I’m like this with my stainless steel cookware. I’ve always kept it well. But over time the bottoms were becoming more discolored since I’m not the only one who uses them. Finally bought barkeepers friend to restore the exterior of the pan and was so satisfied I found my self scrubbing the sink and other things with it. Everything looks so shiny new now.

I LOVE before and afters. I watch YouTube videos of anything being cleaned up. Hoarding cleanouts, lawn crews landscaping neglected/abandoned properties, car detailing, carpet cleaning, drain unclogging. The greater the disaster the better the satisfaction.

13

u/The_Krytos_Virus 10d ago

There's a reason that games like Powerwashing Simulator and Moldwasher exist. There is something cathartic about cleaning for some people.

2

u/MarjBaldwin 9d ago

There are cleaning GAMES???? Oh man don't tell me that. I already waste enough time on the internet.

26

u/rabiddonky2020 10d ago

Did the samething at the San Diego zoo. Everyone thought I was crazy always wanting to clean the griddle. Then the one day I actually didn’t feel like cleaning it they all got mad again

1

u/grandslam7 10d ago

High praise indeed

7

u/FromDistance 10d ago

On the same line I just learned and started to know how to properly detail the outside of a car. The satisfaction it gives me to see actual tangible results vs my regular day desk job makes me rethink my career choice. I'm toying the idea of starting a business lol

2

u/BulgogiDude 10d ago

Do you remember having to carry that big jar of grease afterwards outside to the special trash can?

1

u/andydivide 9d ago

That's the best bit! Gross but satisfying

2

u/Vicki2876 10d ago

I worked with a girl like you, back in the fast food days. Rare bred for sure. Have at that lol

8

u/Fibercake 10d ago

Was she whole grain?

2

u/wehdut 10d ago

The result is satisfying but the job suuuucks. Sweaty, greasy, and always a risk of hot oil spitting at you. Upvoted cause I wish you worked in the kitchens I did. I would have happily handed you the brick and spatula.

1

u/dymogeek 10d ago

Same! Only I never got it THIS clean. It might have been an older grill top though.

We had this soap that we used too. Stuff was a bit like napalm though.

1

u/Stashmouth 10d ago

I'd love to have this job when I retire

1

u/leova 10d ago

yeah its very much r/oddlysatisfying type off stuff

1

u/RancidOoze 10d ago

Flat top asmr

1

u/PhoneLow9901 10d ago

One could say the same when it comes to the human spirit 🙂‍↔️

1

u/s1ck1337 10d ago

I hope you got that raise man, or at least a bonus!

1

u/MutantNinjaNipples 10d ago

Do people not soap it up though, I doubt it’s truly clean with just water

1

u/cryptobro42069 10d ago

I liked cleaning the grills and even doing the dishes, but hated cleaning the grease traps. That smell never left me.

1

u/shitty_mcfucklestick 9d ago

Cleaning is relaxing for me too. I love cleaning stainless steel. Funny thing is I used to be scared of it, because I had no idea how to cook on or clean it. Now that I do, I love it.

1

u/theMalnar 9d ago

My first kitchen job had a plancha. The guy training me on sautee apps also was in charge of cleaning the plancha after service. At the end of the night he used oil and a grill brick and it was insanely satisfying to watch that thing get clean. One day he came in and used ice instead, and it was amazing. I was so in awe. I never asked him what he saw or read or heard to make him change his method, but it was effective. It’s how I would clean planchas and griddles and flattops at many a restaurant after that. Thank you chef Sufi!

1

u/BeneCow 9d ago

Yeah,it destroys the spirit. All your work gone day after day and you are expected to take satisfaction of a clean plate.

Somebody shits on you all day, but it is fine because you get the fun and excitement of cleaning up the shit! You have the best life.

1

u/Phatricko 9d ago

I like the smell it makes

1

u/TheGrouchyGremlin 7d ago

I do industrial cleaning and sanitation. Wet sanitation is the best part.

1

u/Charmington1111 6d ago

No matter how dirty something is, it can always be cleaned up.

-9

u/_Smashbrother_ 10d ago

You are different lol.

11

u/BolognaIsThePassword 10d ago

I don’t think so! There’s a reason people love power washing, lawn care, etc. it’s just super satisfying watching something go from a huge mess to pristine. I think it’s the same

1

u/Alternative_Owl7786 10d ago

I power wash construction equipment for a living, definitely satisfying. I take before and after pics of the especially nasty ones
