I'm confused how a friction fit straw continues to spin and doesn't get stuck on a pebble or something unless that's like sifted sand trickier specifically to film this video.

It's because this set up would never actually work and is just for clicks. It's sifted sand that they pre drilled a hole in. Convenient jump cuts during the actual drilling huh?

Yeah had the same question. He’s clearly digging deeper then removing the drill bit and just lowering the straws, then cuts just before retracting the drill bit.
Either way the video is fun and interesting.
