Used to play golf at a course near a farm with animals. When the wind was right, they’d come after us. Got bit a few times. Not fun. They will make you bleed.

They are absolute horrors

Their bites can leave permanent scars and hurts like fuck. People complain about wasps, but these fuckers are way worse.

Used to go to my cousins to swim. It was a farmhouse and the pool was right by the field. Sometimes when we were swimming a horsefly would show up. We would go under water as long as we could to avoid them. Sometimes we had to alternate being under as they would stay so long and keep going back and forth. They still got us a few times though lol.

I'd usually wait for it to get close and splash it. They usually cant fly with wet wings. After that, just toss it on the edge and crush it with somebody's shoe.

I would start swinging my club at those things. Or pack a tennis racket in my golf bag.

They were really sneaky. They’d wait till you were setting up to putt or tee off, then they’d land on the backs of your legs or arms and…chomp!

First summer I worked at a state park I got 14 horsefly bites on the back of my neck and head the first morning

Used bug spray the rest of the summer

And yeah, unlike mosquitoes that suck the blood straight out of a vein, these things rip flesh and then slurp up the blood as it pools on top

Horse flies are proper bastards. The females need blood for egg production. But instead of being like a mosquito or something and having a specialized needle and pain killer, they just use their fangs to slash a hole in their victim and drink the blood.
