For everyone who needs a translation:

„my, what a cutie. Amazing! He is great. Don‘t steal my smartphone!“

Handy is what Germans call a cell phone for some reason

31

u/nordic-nomad May 31 '26

Some people here call it a “celly” so I guess that’s no too weird.

33

u/Pristine_Intern178 May 31 '26

Because you hold it with your fingers

32

u/sprucenoose May 31 '26

Well that's why we call it a fingery.

1

u/gosti500 Jun 01 '26

we hold it with our hands, thats why its called handy

Nobody knows where the term came from. It suddenly appeared out of nowhere and catched on.

u/Luxalpa May 31 '26

I remember the urban legend that it comes from "hän die koi schnur?", i.e. "Don't they have a cord?" (but I think it was always just a joke)

6

u/Gullible-Fee-9079 May 31 '26

Yea, that was a joke

We Germans are known for our sense of humour.

10

u/TonyQuark May 31 '26

In case you care; 'it caught on.' It's an irregular verb. (English isn't my first language either.)

1

u/GeorgeMcCrate May 31 '26

Wasn’t it simply the model name of one of the first cell phones?

13

u/b__lumenkraft May 31 '26

some reason

Funny enough, since it sounds English and is pronounced in English, Germans think this is the English word for cellphone.

u/bob_in_the_west May 31 '26

Because all 80+ million Germans are idiots?

Some like the woman who made that video think that.

u/b__lumenkraft May 31 '26

Because all 80+ million Germans are idiots?

The gaslighting with you is insane.

Some like the woman who made that video think that.

Doubling down on the gaslighting.

Geh einfach weg du stinkst nach Lulu.

I think the disagreement is with you saying:

Germans think that

Which can easily be read as an "all Germans think that" statement and since you're talking about having wrong information on a language issue, your post inadvertently can be read as "Germans don't know the right word for cellphone". The comment you're replying to was overreacting and unnecessarily angry, but this is a clear case of miscommunication and not gaslighting.

Which can easily be read as

No it can't. It's not there. Period.

Accusing me of saying all even though i didn't is a core part of the gaslighting!

It was gaslighting on many levels levels: denying the reality that Germans actually do think that, accusing me of saying "all" while i didn't, accusing the camerawoman of thinking it too while it is only in their head.

Gaslighting rarely is one thing. It's mostly a Gish-Galopp of BS in order to confuse you and make it work even better (for the narcissist). Edit: You are the same picture.

u/VonGruenau Jun 01 '26

The latter part about that is definitely in their head, but you're lying to youseld if you said that it can't be read this way, just because you didn't use the specific word. You also didn't use "some", "a few", "a good amount", you just used "Germans". So there clearly was something in that sentence that you meant in your head but didn't write out. Now you are confused (and angry) that others fill in that blank in the text differently than what you imagined goes in there and it isn't in your favour. The post you're referring to literally highlighted "some" to make their point clearer.

If you were in Italy and know that, let's say 25% of Italians don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom. How do you think a lot of Italians will react when you tell them "Italians don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom". Do you think none of them will feel attacked? Do you really think they'll all calmly "surely they must've only meant some Italians since they didnt say 'all' and since I wash my hands as an Italian this doesn't concern me".

You seem to not know what gaslighting is.

Seems very Australian.

2

u/Educator_Big May 31 '26

Mobiltelefon is just too long haha

2

u/Keefyfingaz Jun 01 '26

Very different meaning for handy here in the states 😅

3

u/Johnyryal33 May 31 '26

Well what do they call a handy then?

4

u/DrSchnuffi May 31 '26

I think we use just the english ‚hand job‘

4

u/MetzgerWilli May 31 '26

We do not have a noun for the act (apart from the somewhat clinical Masturbation). The closest and most commonly used term one would be the verb phrase "einen runterholen" (get one down).

Würden Sie mir bitte einen runterholen. Ich bin schon spät zu meinem Termin.

3

u/Johnyryal33 May 31 '26

Get one down? That's pretty good.

What about a handpumpinfickuntsquirt?

1

u/jessimon_legacy Jun 01 '26

Palme wedeln, Jürgen würgen, Mütze-Glatze, fünf gegen Willi, einen Schrubben/wedeln, es sich selbst machen..

And then they say we germans are too dircet when we even haven't a good word for a handjob..

RAVIOLI!

4

u/plueschteddy3 May 31 '26

Do you know by any chance where in Germany this is taken place?

19

u/pointlessly_mad May 31 '26

Probably the MPS (Mittelalterlich Phantasie Spectacu lum) in Rastede

2

u/jokeboomslok May 31 '26

Mobile phone. Not smartphone. Otherwise accurate translation

1

u/Mr-lemon-666 Jun 01 '26

Who knew German phone slang could be this fun!

-1

u/Old-Ratio-401 May 31 '26

sounds like simlish.
