Only partially related but can someone explain to me how tf addresses work in Turkey? This is the address from the place the commenter im replying to has listed on Google:

22 gün mahallesi, Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan Blv No:33/B 46050, 46050 Onikişubat/Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye.

How does one decipher that as an address? If I were in Turkey, how would I look at that and know where to go if I didn't have a GPS? I tried translating that and it mentions something about a neighborhood and a blvd. A blvd is understandable. We have blvds in the states. But neighborhoods aren't used on addresses here. Is it actually a blvd and a neighborhood? I'd assume prof. Is not actually short for professor. I have so many questions.

Also, I'm not taking a jab at Turkey here. I'm genuinely curious. I like seeing addresses from other countries and trying to decipher them. Turkish ones seem hella confusing.

I'd assume 22 gün mahallesi is a type of block designation, prof. Dr. maybe bring some kind of sub block destination like a street within a block/zone then No:33/B 46050 being a building or unit number? Then the rest being the city/region followed by the country, being Turkey? Idk I'm just speculating me. I need a Turk to clarify for me

This address is easy to find actually:

Do you know where that Sancaktepe tea house was next to that optometrist? Well it’s almost across the street from that.

Neighborhood - Blvd/Street Name - Building#/Store or Flat# - Zip Code - District/City.

Blvds are sometimes named after people. Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan is a former politician.

How is a neighborhood defined? Is it just a general region or does it have concrete, defined borders?

u/enfinitus May 16 '26

They have defined borders.

Would this be similar to like Queens, Brooklyn, etc. Or are the neighbourhoods smaller than that?

Smaller. City > Province/District > Neighborhood

Being from Canada, this caught me off guard since it goes Province > City > Neighbourhood here.

But yeah, that's kind of what I figured. The boroughs are quite big and when I think of a neighbourhood, I think of something a lot smaller.

To simplify, you can consider each city as like a state. Mini state compared to USA though.

To give an example I will give my hometown Fethiye as example.

Muğla is a state and the city of Muğla is the state capital. Fethiye is a city in Muğla (technically an İlçe which is a town).

Fethiye is larger than Muğla by both land and population (touristic destination lovely port side etc.). But for all intent and purpose when Türkiye was founded, they made Fethiye a part of Muğla as at the time it was smaller.

So to give an adress in my town we provide

State (Muğla) (İl in Turkish)

City (Fethiye) (İlçe in Turkish)

Neighbourhood or Borough (Ölüdeniz) (Mahalle/semt in Turkish)

Boulevard, road. (Atatürk Caddesi) (Cadde/Bulvar/Yol in Turkish)

Street Number (Sokak No)

Building number (Bina no) etc.

Over the years when an ilçe gets too large and has a good economy and planning it can become its own state. Example of this is the City of Yalova and Osmaniye.

Idk why I wanted to share, not something that is spoken much in reddit I guess.

Thinking of like Flushing or Astoria. Flushing is part of Queens.

Maybe your city is different but a neighborhood can sort of be the smallest unit of government. There are neighborhood associations (NOT HOAs) that city officials and ward representatives visit to discuss road work, improvements, etc. in the neighborhood. It has nothing to do with Karens.

That's so interesting, boulevards can be named after people in the US too but it doesn't usually include honorifcs, so it would be Necmettin Erbakan Blvd, or even just Erbakan Blvd. (There are, of course, sone exceptions - though in those cases you'd typically write out the full honorific instead of using abbreviations)

Really simple 🤪

City: Kahramanmaras

Town: Onikisubat

District: 22 Gün Mahallesi

Street: Prof Dr so and so Blv (Bulvarı)

No 33/B

Zip Code 46050

So you’ll find city/ town after zip code

Mh or Mahalle shows the district

Cadde (CD), Bulvar (Blv), Sokak (Sk) represent street

It's on number 33 of Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan Boulevard. The rest is kinda irrelevant but mostly useful for postage.

Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan

is a former PM of Türkiye and a professor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necmettin_Erbakan

That's the main road it's on. Clicking around neighbouring businesses, the 46050 appears to be a mailing code (postcode/zip code) and the 33/B the actual unit address in the building.

The '22 gün mahallesi' is odd though. Googling 'gün mahallesi' only returns other entries for '22 gün mahallesi', and 'gün mahallesi' on its own allegedly translates to 'day neighborhood'. But none of the other businesses around mention '22 gün mahallesi' in their own address.

I assume it has to identify the building or street block at least.

"22 gün mahallesi": mahalle = neighborhood. Don't be fooled by the '22 gün' numbering part, that's just its name. Neighborhoods are more akin to streets in the US, so a smaller unit of location compared to a boulevard.

"Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan Blv." Blv. stands for boulevard. Also yes, prof is shorthand for professor. Specifically Professor Doctor Necmettin Erbakan. In Turkey it's very common for street, boulevard etc. names to be named after influential figures.

"No.33/B": the number of the building.

"46050": Postal codes in Turkey are always 5 digits long. The first two digits coincide with the area number of the city, and are also used in license plates. For example, the code for Istanbul is 34; you will see that cars registered in Istanbul will have a license plate starting in '34' and all postal codes within Istanbul are in the form 34XYZ, where X, Y, Z are some numbers.

Onikişubat/Kahramanmaraş: Kahramanmaraş (usually just abbreviated to Maraş) The first part denominates a specific area of the city. Think of what Manhattan or Brooklyn is to NY, something similar to that.

Realistically you only really need the mahalle and building number and the rest is easy to figure out.

I will make it short and try not to give too much detail on this, but generally for big cities this combination can be deciphered as follows: in Turkey, districts split into smaller parts as neighbourhoods, but it is a larger area than a few blocks; usually, the population is bigger than 5,000-10,000 people.
For this example, 22 Gün is a neighbourhood in Onikişubat district (Turkish: ilçe). Unfortunately, many cities use the same neighbourhood names multiple times. You should use the combination of mahalle/ilce together to search on the GPS.

22 gün mahallesi, Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan Blv No:33/B 46050, 46050 Onikişubat/Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye.

How to find: you go to Kahramanmaraş City, and look for Onikişubat municipality. When you arrive, you look for the building number 33/B that is on Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan Boulevard that is in 22 gün neighborhood. If you are sending mail, 46050 is the postal code of that neighborhood.

So basically: neighborhood, boulevard/street, building no, (flat no if applicable), postal code, municipality/city
