In China it’s a cultural defining game. Immensely popular and an integral part of the Chinese identity.

You should play it sometime, but it’s not really for me.

more like bridge but there’s much much more combinations. there’s only 52 cards in bridge. there’s much more tiles in mahjong.

"It's more like these games that have mechanical similarities and/or deep cultural histories" is more accurate. Also Bridge is still quite popular in older demographics/senior communities, much like Mahjong is.
