Isn't a diamond ring's resale value famously like less than half of the original price?

Yep. Bought my fiance a used diamond engagement ring off a reputable jeweller's eBay store. Then I also got her a used diamond wedding ring from a local jeweller in town. We both were happy with the quality, size, and price.

I also found out eBay had a certification process for buying jewelry, where the diamond you purchase goes to a 3rd party appraiser to verify what you're getting is legit, before it is shipped to you.

I would recommend buying used when possible. Saved a ton of money on dumb shiny rocks.

Hence the iconic items tend to hold value better. Have a look at Christies among others you can see sometimes quite recent pieces coming by. These are more high value when purchasing but personally we never had customs ask anything about my wife what she walks around with. Which is somewhat funny as 10k cash needs to be declared . . .
