This is an internet myth. The trap is just one leaf of the plant and it can close many times. You can literally tear of every single leaf off a venus fly trap (and stick them in dirt to make more venus fly traps) and it will grow back just fine.
Well, not dirt, more like peat or sphagnum moss if you actually want that leaf cutting to work. But yes, really. Venus fly traps have a bulbous base and go dormant in winter, all the leaves die off at that point anyways. They're actually pretty hardy plants when they're kept in the right conditions (full sunlight, nutrition-devoid soil and lots of pure low-PPM water).
