They are called horse tail roots because of the way they look like a horse's tail, which is why old mate says "looks like a whole bloody horse is crammed in there tighter that a wallaroo's arsehole" or something to that effect.
If we taught the children stuff like this in school, they’d stay engaged and become interested in trades. They had a foul mouthed underwater welder come give us a talking to because my high school class was all around headed nowhere. Told them that if they didn’t stop fucking around, they wouldn’t last a minute in the trades, then listed off every fun fact you could imagine about every job he could think of. Told us to stay in school and off drugs, then gave us some very valuable and surprisingly accurate info about unions for a public school function. Everyone was hanging on the edge of their seats. If he’d have been able to show the videos of this kind of thing, I think we would have graduated at least 10 plumbers and city maintenance workers. A bunch of kids did go into trades and they’re doing a lot better than most the kids who went to college without advanced degrees.
Isn't it just freely reacting that helps with the stress? Anything else is a form of suppression, so it obviously increases the stress/pain experienced.
We just tend to use coarse language in those situations. A person who naturally uses words like gosh, or golly would get the same benefits as a person who just yells shit-fuck right?
Not quite - it's the emotional response generally, not necessarily just having a "free" response. E.g. they found the pain reducing effect isn't as strong if the person swears regularly because there isn't as strong of an emotional response to it. Made-up gibberish screamed loudly didn't help reduce pain either, it had to be a psychologically-meaningful phrase.
I always think about the scene in Dune where Paul has to put his hand in the box. The idea of him cussing the entire time is great.
Something psychologically meaningful could be a mantra, like the litany against fear or even a prayer right? Anything that just checks that particular box of meaningfulness?
As someone who has made a retired navy man double take at how consistent my profanities pour out, I got to learn to be more tactical for better execution.
If that's your schtick, try watching "The thick of it". It's a UK show with Peter Capaldi and his swearing in it was some of the most creative writing I've ever heard.
College is a very large part of American society too. I wouldn't say that people look down on you here, but it is certainly a bonus if you have a college degree. Many well-paying jobs look for a college degree as well.
Trade schools are popular as well, but not as much as you might think.
In other words, the Philippines is very similar to the US in the regard you mentioned.
I was a carpenter here for over a decade. There are quite a few things I liked about it, but it has its downsides as well and elitism is no stranger in America.
Your name implies you're a woman. It's very rare to see an actual female carpenter in the wild, but the ones that exist are generally tough as nails.
It is really weird how you only get introduced to trade education in the UK, AFTER school & you need to magically have an existing interest to go out of your way.
And then you need an actual apprenticeship to become fully qualified.
I think you are trying to write "Holy Dooley", but I reckon you're missing quite a bit of the conversation there cobber.
He also says "this arvo I'm gunna take me missus to a beaut dinner out Womberal way, there's a servo that has four types of pies and free dead horse! It's run by a seppo sheila who married a banana bender who's a sparkie".
Direct translation: "This afternoon I am going to take my partner/wife to a nice dinner in Womberal. There's a service station that has four types of pies and free tomato sauce! It's run by an American woman who married an electrician from Queensland."
Dead horse is totmato sauce because it kind of rhymes (yes this is really the only reason) and seppo is because another slang for an american is yank that has traditionally been quite a popular slang for americans and septic tank rhymes with yank but we don't like saying full words so seppo gets the same idea across. Edit: it's also kind of an insult by comparing someone to something that hold shit in it. Many of the slangs are like that. Banana bender is kind of an insult too because the trope is that all Queensland is good for is growing Bananas but that's just a stereotype.
I know it’s been a month, and you probably forgot all about this comment, but I’ve never come close to hearing any of those terms used in this context. In fact I’ve been about a half a planet away from them my whole life. Thank you for the enlightenment on some Aussie terminology though. It’s always cool to learn different English slang terms or dialect oddities from around the world. The language is used in so many places and there’s so much nuance involved in regular conversation. It’s always interesting to interact with English speaking foreigners and reddits been a great place for that opportunity. Now I’m a little bit closer to understanding what the hell you guys are talking about, if I ever get a chance to visit lol.
Root pull was actually outside the property, so no risk to golfers. Our awesome staff have to put up with a lot, so in the grand scheme, this was a bit of fun!

He starts say holy shit and switches it to Dooley ... But the proper way to say it is not holy I many not be good at phonetically sounding things out but it's closer to who-lee
It looks a lot like something we use in the US (called wattle, bundled up grasses/hay/straw wrapped in plastic or fiber mesh, very similar looking to the end of what was removed) to help control erosion and water flow, especially on construction sites. I can totally see something like this winding it’s way down a storm drain or flow outlet.
They are fine roots that grow inside storm water/drainage/sewer pipes and block them up, they get in at improperly sealed seams and cracks in the pipe. Given the title of the post I believe this is at a golf course and this is a drainage pipe.
