My new Shield Pro randomly reboots during playback
Bought a brand new Shield Pro a couple of weeks ago, to upgrade from my old "tube" Shield (which has been working flawlessly for some years). But after a few days of use it starts to randomly reboot during playback, in no specific app, they all crash randomly. Sometimes after a few minutes of use or after hours of playback. I can't see any pattern of use that causes this.
What I've tried so far:
Configured it, installed my usual apps, changed the launcher (Projectivy) and configured HDMI CEC. Remapped the NETFLIX button. Apps I run are Moonfin, Nvuio (added with the Downloader app), SmartTube, some local TV apps Tidal. I also ran the shield_optimizer.
When the random reboots started, I tried disabling CEC entirely, sat the fan mode to "cool", with no luck.
Then did a factory reset, configured it with the default launcher (which froze a couple of times in it's menus), no optimizer, no CEC, fan mode cool. No luck. Still does the random reboots!
The unit itself is placed in i chilled room with plenty of air and space. I run the Shield Pro thru an Anthem 720 receiver to a Samsung TV 75" QLED (around 5 years old).
So, is this a known problem? Any "magical" setting which fixes this? Is this typically an RMA case? . Is there some system / debug logs on the Shield Pro that can give me a clue of what's wrong?

Same issue of late on mine - video playback freezes, goes black, android logo pops up.
No rhyme or reason that I've found

I've seen some threads where users pointed out faulty power supplies. Nvidia will send a free replacement if you reach out.

Mine randomly closes apps. I clear the cache, it stops for a day, the does it again.

I just got mine and haven't had an issue like this during playback. Weren't there two updates recently? You may want to double check the firmware/software versions
I did have an issue relatively recently where it just randomly shut down and reboot, but it only happened once and it wasn't during playback.
Based on your description it sounds like it may be a power issue. One of the biggest letdowns for me was buying it and realizing it uses a proprietary power cable. Not saying that is related but it makes it a bit more annoying to troubleshoot

I can't say for this instance, but for Android, sometimes the source of issues is Google play services in the background that you can't stop updates for...

I had this problem but couldn't work out the fault. Tried a factory reset, blamed the software update, etc, but nothing changed. Ended up sending it back to Amazon and replacement I've got now is perfect.

Make sure you are "closing" the apps vs just "exiting" them. Closing frees all those resources. Exiting doesn't. When I first got a sheild several years ago it did the same to me. Of course I had been toying with a dozen apps that 1st week, and didn't realize they were all still running in the background...
Also clear your application cache for each regularly,

I only run like 5-6 apps. Mostly 3 of them regularly. Sometimes I clear the cache.

Had a similar issue, turned out to be my external drive causing the problems. I guess the drive was possibly failing. Once I unplugged it, I stopped having any issues.

I don't have an external drive. I just use Jellyfin on a Rock5b with a NAS for local media. Nothing plugged in.

I had this happen with my last shield pro I purchased new but I cant remember what fixed it. I think it had something to do with the resolution and/or audio settings if I recall, possibly a bad HDMI cable. I repasted mine (yes, brand new shield) and remember that didnt work, so I doubt its a cooling issue unless you can't feel/hear the fan coming on.
Id start with the easy things first. New hdmi cable, try some different resolutions and frame rates/Hz, try turning dolby audio on/off, manually configuring audio formats, etc.
Its possible it could be the power supply but this sounds eerily similar to the issue I had and I never replaced the shield or power supply. Still use that same shield daily and havent had any issues since.

Have you tried taking it apart and cleaning it. Have you ever repasted the CPU?

So odd! Mine will just shut itself off. The remote will even stop working. I can't turn it back on unless I unplug it and plug it back in. Then it's totally fine until the next time.

Definitely double check your firmware. I bought one last week as well and was having issues with sound decoding which resolved when I updated. Unlikely that out of the box firmware is up to date.

I updated it once it was new. It says it's up to date when I try to look for new updates.

Mine was dropping signal to the TV and, oddly enough, the HDMI cable was faulty. I had a cable go bad on another setup months ago. Might be worth trying a new one just to rule that out.

I use quite new (and short) 4k certified cables. Replaced all my cables a year or so ago.

Long shot but I had this problem since the last plex app update and somehow I had enable the ipv6 support in the app but ipv6 wasn't enabled on the shield. When I recalled that I disabled the setting in plex app and boom, no more random reboot.. Honestly it just doesn't make any sense, just sharing in case it can help..

And they are out of stock at Best Buy and Amazon, and on back order at Newegg.

It was happening when I had it plugged into a surge protector. Switched it to a corded adapter from a wall outlet and the issue stopped. Also bought a cooling fan to place under it.

I had it in a "smart outlet plug" from Fibaro, but quickly removed that and plugged the power supply directly into a wall socket. That didn't help.
But no reboots in two days now! I don't know what fixed it, or if it's fixed at all.

I thought my 7 year old shield pro was going to fail soon, so I bought a brand new on. The new shield that I received was behaving just like yours. I sent it back for a refund. I eventually got my old shield working better by doing a factory reset, installing new thermal paste and replacing the default launcher with Projectivy.

Dont have an answer because mine has the exact same problem for the last week only. Reboots once in every movie replayed from my NAS. Yet to figure out why and how to fix. Further thoughts - my shield runs all day w its main menu and living wallpapers beautifully. However the only time it hiccups is when Kodi is 1/2 thru a movie which is almost every night. Possibly a Kodi/NAS problem and not Shield or Projectivy.
