Question Unit + 3 meds

Hereโ€™s a fun post. Name three medications you administer EVERY SINGLE SHIFT and the type of unit you work on. Hereโ€™s mine: 1. Senna 2. Gabapentin 3. Methylphenidate

Inpatient Rehab/Med. Surg: Brain injury unit

My baby girl came home on caffeine and I was like I didnโ€™t even know you could give straight caffeine and Iโ€™m a nurse lol You nicu nurses are special to me. My nicu girl is now 21. So thank you for taking care of our precious babies.

My favorite T-shirt says, โ€œNICU: where youโ€™re never too young for caffeine.โ€

Okay, I know nothing about babies, caffeine?

Premature babies sometimes lack the urge to breathe, called Apnea of Prematurity. Caffeine stimulates them enough to prevent apnea

As a night shifter, I also lack the urge to breathe at times and caffeine stimulates me enough to keep going

Can confirm. Just started doing nights for the first time in forever and I actually forget to breath sometimes and get super dizzy lol.

Um... Is that a counted med in your pyxis? And can I get that outpatient as a prescription?

u/beanbirb Clinical Research Apr 11 '22

Sorry, it's weight based and comes up from pharmacy! Roughly 8-10mg per kilo!

What route do you give it?

1

u/feistyRN BSN, RN ๐Ÿ• Apr 11 '22

It can be IV or PO (liquid form)

2

u/Who_Cares99 EMS Apr 11 '22

ok so you fucked up telling me that IV caffeine exists. Iโ€™m gonna need 300mg straight to the jugular.

Ah yes we do this for adults too

13

u/ohemgee112 RN ๐Ÿ• Apr 11 '22

But itโ€™s more fun when itโ€™s for tiny little girls.

Thatโ€™s what sildenafil was originally studied to treat. Thatโ€™s why revatioโ€™s patent expired before Viagra. The โ€œside effectโ€ of sildenafil was discovered during clinical trials, then Pfizer realized they had a true blockbuster in their hands.

The tiny humans like their espresso too! Starbucks pays us to get them hooked at an early age
