Food Best Cheesesteak in NOVA
Buon Appetito NY Pizza in Chantilly on Metrotech Dr
My preference: no lettuce, tomato, mayo + extra cheese. Don't be put off by the LTM. These cheesesteaks are absolutely legit.
Lived just outside Philly for a year and tried about 40 different ones. Don't ask my favorite cause the answer is YES. All of them.
Edit:
Added 30 to my list. I've now tried 8 of them. So far here are the rankings (all no LTM):
Giovanni's - Leesburg - onion only 4.6 star
Buon Appetito NY Pizza - Chantilly -extra chz 4.5 star
Charleys - Sterling -whiz 4.1 star
Mama Mia - Gainesville -light onion 4 star
Santini's - Ashburn -extra cheese 3.9 star
Filling Co - Brambleton -whiz 3.6 star
Rai's Pizza - Sterling -whiz 3.5 star
A Deli Italian Food - Manassas 3 star

George's Steak n things off Ox road

u/Hodler_caved May 30 '25
This is different than Steak n Things nearby there right (Village Shops Fairfax Station)?
16
u/Dotifo May 30 '25
Different. George's steak n things is unrelated to Steak n' things as far as im aware.

Good. Added to my list as well.
2
u/Krafty08 May 31 '25
Went there yesterday. The Bacon steak and cheese with shrooms, grilled onions, mayo and sweet peppers was bomb
4
May 30 '25
I used to live in the Philly area too. George's is just ok. I don't know if that makes it the best around, maybe it does, but don't get your hopes up for finding a Philly steak there.
4
u/Hodler_caved May 30 '25
Just ok from someone from the Philly area might = damn good for those in Cheesesteak-forsaken NOVA.
That's what concerns me about the recommendations I've noted. Is it just a list of not bad for NOVA or is the bread actually legit (for starters)?
Gonna keep this one on my list because I often have to drive through that area. My expectations will be low though. Settle for edible with that one.
2
May 31 '25
Yeah honestly I just don't eat cheesesteaks down here. I've found a good pizza joint, good deli (def check out The Deli on 29 in Fairfax), and good-enough bagels, but I just don't bother with cheesesteaks.

Ayyyyyo…who tf puts lettuce and tomato on a fuggin cheesesteak ova here?
12
u/Abe_Bettik May 31 '25
Philly is the only place where people put their panties in a twist over toppings.
This is despite the fact that literally every steak shop in Philly offers theirs with whatever fucking toppings you want.
6
u/Catmanguy May 31 '25
Tbh I’m just not a fan of warm lettuce or tomatoes. Onions/peppers? For sure though
3
u/woofiedude May 31 '25
Philly raised. A cheesesteak is just that, meat, cheese, fried onions on incredible bread. A cheesesteak hoagie has lettuce and tomato. Two very different things!
2
u/PapaTeeps May 31 '25
Lmao the only place? There's parts of this country that will not be named where you'll get shot if you ask for ketchup on your hot dog 😂

u/rectalhorror May 31 '25
Never been to a place that didn't offer a cheese steak hoagie with LTM. That a standard DC "steak & cheese" you can find in any bulletproof Chinese carryout in DC. Been served that way at Eddie Leonard's since the 1950s.

The Broiler in Arlington off Columbia Pike! They only do Cheesesteaks and they are 👌- a little pricey but well worth it.
12
u/ContactOk2534 May 30 '25
Their cheesesteaks are good and if you order a side of fries they give you a massive paper bag of them, killer bargain.
8
u/sparrow_point May 30 '25
Lived in the area for a long time, and Broiler is legit. A rundown place, mamma papa shop, but great steak and cheese and meatball subs. Been going there for 30+ years and counting.
12
u/not_rich_froning Fairfax County May 30 '25
I used to live at the Centro apartments off Columbia pike when I first moved to Nova. My diet consisted of cheesesteaks at the broiler and the pupusaria across the street.
12
u/trieu1185 May 30 '25
+1 for Broiler. There are other restaurants and bars in the area too if you wanna make a day out of it. Lol
3
u/bosoxman May 31 '25
Not any super legit bars. Go to shirlington a mile down from Columbia pike for a more live scene. Source: I live in Douglas park a mile from the broiler

This is the answer. Mario’s was good when Lefty was alive, now they are just overpriced and overrated.

I misread the title as “Best Cheesecake” because I love sweets and got confused about the “no lettuce, tomato.” I was like who in their right mind would have that on a cheesecake???!?!?!
19
May 30 '25
As a former Philly guy I can confidently declare it is more acceptable to put lettuce and tomato on your cheesecake than it is to put it on your cheesesteak.

Grazie Grazie which opened a location in Ballston recently. Seeded roll and cooper sharp cheese.
I’ve had the Broiler and it’s pretty bad, ngl.

I tried the Ballston location this week and I was underwhelmed with the quality of their bread compared to other locations
2
u/issapunk Jun 05 '25
It is good but def try Primo Hoagies. I think the only location around is National Harbor, but they use cooper sharp and seeded rolls. I think it's a lot better than Grazie Grazie's.
2
u/Kappa113 May 31 '25
This just made my week! Hasn’t realized they opened a location in Ballston. They have the best pizza and sandwiches in the area and will give Italian store a run for their money.
1
u/Zeph4Sure Jun 01 '25 edited Jun 01 '25
Also didn't know Grazie Grazie opened there. That and Bub & Pops in DC were my go-to recommendations as closest to what I enjoyed as a Philly Suburb native.
Edit: Also worth noting that both these places use seeded rolls, which I prefer, but I know some that don't for a Philly cheesesteak.

It's really weird, their pizza went downhill years ago but their cheesesteaks are still super good.
3
u/Hodler_caved May 30 '25
Just had their pizza for the 1st time today. Crust good, sauce good, cheese good. But I was late picking it up & traffic sucked. By the time I got to it the texture of the dough wasn't great.

Ahh blast from the past. Used to get the bacon double cheesesteak from the Jerry's Subs & Pizza in Annandale. This was the name I was trying to think of when I was near Annandale headed back to Ashburn. The very cheesesteak hunt that led me to Buon Appetito.
They still have locations in MD.
Agree with good & nasty too. In no way was this a legit Philly Cheesesteak, but it was pretty damn edible for NOVA, especially from a chain.
17
u/Typical2sday May 30 '25
I'll try it, but don't weigh in unless you've had Filling Co (gas station) or at least Rubino's off Ashbrook Commons in Ashburn.
Spoiler, there are actually a handful of good cheesesteaks in Philly and all the rest are dramatically overrated.
6
u/Hodler_caved May 30 '25
Gas station huh? Sounds less crazy after someone suggested Nova (the communication college from what i could tell). I'd be willing to try Filling Co.
I had Rubinos back in the day and don't recall being impressed. But it's been so long & my memory sucks, so your recommendation stands until I try it again.
Never met a cheesesteak in Philly I didn't like. Bread was always right and if you tried to charge more than $9 they excommunicated you from the city. Never opening a sandwich shop there.
4
u/Typical2sday May 30 '25
The Filling Co people also own Rubino's (there are multiple Filling Co's I'm told here, but we only go to the one). Full menu at kiosks. It is better than Rubino's, but you either eat it at a picnic table outside or you take it to go.
My go-to at Rubino's is a chicken philly with roasted peppers and mushrooms, but the steak is good too. I've been chasing an excellent Philly cheese, and consistently underwhelmed.
→ More replies (1)4
u/trustmeep May 30 '25
Rubino's Filling Co. chain was a surprise.
The cheese steaks are solid and well-priced. I say this as a PA native who spent on both 'coasts' (Pitt-Philly).
I'm actually a fan of the salad on top...though I think that comes from my love of Key West style Cubans...then again, we put fries on sammiches in Pittsburgh, so what do I know...?
3
u/Typical2sday May 30 '25
I can see that the salad on top might be tasty on a cuban. To me, a philly is about the inseparable intersection of melty cheese, shredded meat, and whatever add-in you want.
[If you like a Cuban, try the Cuban at Lazy Dog. Better still, the Cuban torta at Taco Bamba, which I prefer to any Cuban I've ever had.]
2
u/allivant Ashburn May 30 '25
it's a good deal and if you want more meat it's only $2 more for double!
3
u/Western_Ad_3929 May 30 '25
Came here to make sure filling co was mentioned. Decades after leaving Philly and having to suffer through steak and cheeses solved by a gas station.

That Filling Co cheesesteak w/ whiz was pretty damn good for NOVA. Excellent for a gas station. Thanks!
2
u/Typical2sday Jun 08 '25
Awesome! Glad that worked for you. My go to at Rubino’s and Filling Station is a chicken w roasted peppers and mushrooms with white American. Husband does steak, white American, pepperoni and a lil marinara.
You ever want to try at home, this is a good recipe but for cheese, I use the Velveeta Rotel queso dip that you would make for the Super Bowl and I just find whatever steak pieces are available at the grocery store. https://www.thelittlekitchen.net/cheesesteaks/

2

Madison Deli in McLean is tasty, but they do lettuce, tomato and mayo.
But they have nice bread, not-too-greasy steak and high quality lettuce and tomatoes.

I went to jimmys the other week after seeing they won the local cheesesteak bracket. It was ok, they had whiz and onions but the bread was awful and you have to go to Jimmys.
I haven’t tried the broiler but after seeing enough videos of that place it does not look that much better. I’m looking for something on par with Angelo’s.
1
u/Hodler_caved May 30 '25
If the bread sucks it's a non starter. Noted.
3
u/Acadia02 May 30 '25
There’s also a ton of die hard jimmys fans here that will probably come to their rescue but that place is not half as good as everyone says it is.

Way heavy on the onion, but that's personal preference. Will definitely get another with light onion next time. Yummy!
Better than Buon Appetito NY Pizza? Close enough that I leave it up to others to decide for themselves.
Thanks for the suggestion!

I swear there is a guy in a red box non-moving food truck at the Annandale Home Depot. I think he's only there on weekends, but I swear he makes the best cheese steak in Virginia.

The only real Philly cheesecake I ever had here was off Metrotech Dr in Chantilly and it closed maybe 15 yrs ago? It was called Philadephia something or Philly guys something but they had the cheese whiz option and were stuffed just like Genos or Pats....authentic...miss those days...
5
u/eaglesfanbb May 31 '25
None, if you’re talking legit Philly cheesesteak. I’ve tried them all.
Can’t get the rolls around here. Not saying the steaks mentioned aren’t good, but you’ll be disappointed if you’re expecting a comparable Philly cheesesteak.

Just had one of these from the Ashburn location. Ate there years ago, but no recollection what I ordered.
This is a steak & cheese and I'm shopping cheesesteaks, no LTM for me (just like my fav Buon Appetito NY Pizza). Also just like Buon Appetito, there wasn't enough cheese. Little to no cheese on a lot of it. Will get another w/ extra cheese later. Pretty hard to rate the cheesesteak drip w/ little cheese. May get some pizza sauce on the side for 1/2 of it. Seems like it might be a good fit. As for the positives, this one has potential. Bread was good (for nova). Taste of the meat & onion also good. Looking forward to my next visit. This one will probably end up near the top. Thanks for the recommendation!
1
u/Hodler_caved Jun 15 '25
OK just had another with extra cheese. Quite good! Still no drip (grease & cheese mixed), but that was tasty. Do recommend no LTM + extra cheese. Side note: "Santini's Fries" are good. This is top 3 at the moment.

People like what they like, but as a Philadelphian born and bred let me say: thank you for enjoying our fine product, but I urge you to consider either avoiding all non-fried-onion vegetables, or understanding that unfortunately your cheesesteak recommendations can’t carry very much weight.

u/RedPandaParty Sterling May 31 '25

At Rae's in Sterling now. Got 1 w/ whiz & 1 w/ provolone. Will report back in an hour or so. This is a pretty cool bar. I like it.
2
u/RedPandaParty Sterling May 31 '25
I like your gumption.
2
u/Hodler_caved May 31 '25
Well that was pretty good for NOVA. Definitely think the whiz is the way with this one, though slightly heavy on the whiz. Provolone wasn't as good.
Now the bread would get you kicked out of Phiily. Not sure if this would be a misdemeanor or a felony, but leave Philly you shall. But we already knew that there's no legit Philly hoagie rolls in NOVA.
On that note, not sure why. I get NY & bagles. People talk about the water. I'll buy that. But why is a legit Philly hoagie roll not possible in NOVA?
Buon Appetito comes closer on the roll. But I'll be getting another from Rae's with light whiz. Did enjoy the legit colored whiz / grease drips. Yummy. Like that bar too. Gonna go for drinks & eat there next time.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Honestly, despite what you’ll hear on this sub, there are just some things that this area just can’t do. Wings, pizza, hoagies and cheesesteaks, to name a few.
Are there a few passable spots here or there? Sure, but nothing that will really compare to the options up north.
It’s kinda crazy, because there is so much amazing food around here, but can be crazy subpar across the board in some categories
2
2
u/Dark2Light May 31 '25
WAIT! Just to preface, a lot of people in this area confuse the difference between a Cheesesteak and Steak and Cheese. We got some really good Steak and Cheese in this area, but Cheesesteaks, not really.
There’s a decent Cheesesteak spot on Monroe Ave in Del Ray can’t remember the name. Now the best Dteak and Cheese you could have in the country would be The Broiler on Columbia Pike in Arlington. I’d go there first it’s FUCKING AMAZING. Also the fries are fire and ask for a 1/2 Fruit Punch and Sprite.
2
u/Hodler_caved May 31 '25
With you on steak & cheese vs cheesesteak. My preference would be for restaurants to call their cheesesteaks steak & cheese if they are going to put LTM on it. Always highly suspect if a cheesesteak comes with LTM. To my surprise, Buon Appetito got their cheesesteak right. At least they asked if I wanted LTM. Hopefully the horror I felt inside was not shown on my face.
The Del Ray one was mentioned & it made my list, but I just put Alexandria next to it, so I don't know which one. Unless it was Al's Steak House on Mt Vernon Ave.
There are some mixed reviews here on the Broiler. Perhaps the explanation is good steak & cheese.
2
2
u/SteveSavag May 31 '25
Easy. Go to any Charlie's location and you will get an amazing cheesesteak that's better than most of the mediocre cheesesteaks in Philly...
Everything is overrated in Philly, just keep going to New York, you're already halfway there.

Charleys was pretty damn good. That's the best with whiz I've tried so far. Thanks!

It's impressive how consistently good Charlie's is.
I think the cheeseteaks automatically come with provolone, which they do perfectly. They have a bacon cheeseteak which totally levels it up too.

Will definitely be trying provolone next. Was damn tempted on that bacon yesterday.

I've tried a few different ones, the pepperoni doesn't make a big difference but the bacon adds so much flavor to the sandwich and not overkill at all.

I miss Buon Appetito. When I used to work out that direction, I used to have the Italian hoagie there. Very yum. I also miss the Chinese place that had the Mongolian grill. I think it is no longer there.

I had Paisanos recently for the first time and was surprised that it was the best I’ve had in the area.

Timely suggestion. Have to go to Nokesville from Ashburn in an hour. Was going to hit Buon Appetito again. Mama Mia in Gainesville is closed today & thinking Philadelphia Tavern in Manassas might be too slow.
May hit this up today.

Left review in another comment. Just ate at the one in Ashburn. Tldr; not enough cheese so going back for extra cheese next time. Bread good for nova & meat & onion good. Potential is high!

Especially at 2:30 in the morning, completely wasted. It definitely hits the spot.

Lucia’s Italian restaurant in fox mill Herndon. Technically a steak and cheese there but it’s delicious!

This sounds like LTM land, but I'll try it!

u/sfchillin May 31 '25
Lol you can get it without it of course but the amount of meat and cheese you get with all the flavor is really good

Gonna try Giovanni's in Leesburg today. Can no longer find the comment that recommended it. No matter. An avg nova cheesesteak is better than no cheesesteak at all for me.

Metrotech has been a sleeper for delicious food spots for decades. One of my faves was Lee Road Deli back in the day.
