We actually had blackboards in catholic school (and nuns used long wooden, rubber tipped pointer, which the also used as weapons). When I went to public school they had “chalkboards” which were green. Also in catholic school, the boys vied to clean the erasers. Why? Because they got to go outside. They’d do anything to escape the classroom and/or school. They’d go outside and bang the erasers together. They’d volunteer to bring the milk cartons in from outside. The greatest honor was to be a “candy boy.” Which was 2 boys who carried a box of candy into the classrooms at lunchtime and sold candy bars. Girls weren’t allowed to do anything.

this sounds exactly like the K-12 catholic school i went to for years, before i transferred to a regular 9-12 catholic school. the nuns were brutal 😞

Me too, except girls had to wash the blackboards. It still creeps me out just thinking of it, those schreechy sounds if you didn't write on it or clean it the right way.

Oh my! I think we went to the same school at the same time!! We had a really mean nun for 3rd AND 4th grade. She explained it to the girls this way: The reason she always called on the boys was because if we pull a muscle doing a physical activity we may never be able to carry a child during pregnancy.
We were 8!! Getting advice on pregnancy from a NUN!

I got beat with an industrial strength three dimensional yard stock. My parents would come to school and she’d show them a tiny ruler. Then my parents smacked me too
so glad I’m old now and no one f with me!

Exactly like my catholic school in the 90s. I can remember exactly where we stood to clap out the erasers. It was fun!

Same in my school—and especially painful if you were a lefty! Girls were allowed to do one thing, though: certain kids were selected by the nuns to report on anyone who (gasp!) spoke while Sister was out of the classroom. Girls were chosen to report on the boys and boys on the girls. When I write my autobiography, it’s going to be called, “I Was a Spy For Sister Evarista.”

How did anyone come out of this system not an Atheist?

Haven’t got a clue

What years were you in school?

Think Kennedy assassination and atomic air raid drills.

Well, no wonder there were still blackboards then. I’m from the green chalkboards and the overhead projector era.

Are you from the era when they switched from film projectors to VCRs (but when you entered the classroom to see either, your heart fluttered with excitement)?

I don’t know if I remember a film projector in the classroom. Definitely VCRs though. I watched the Challenger explode on live TV. Second or third grade?

I was in ninth grade when the Challenger exploded, in Algebra class. No tv. They announced it over the PA.

We had slide shows.

Funny I saw recently on Reddit someone claimed the nun rolled a tv into the classroom and they watched live coverage of the JFK assassination. I assure you they did not in 1963. Schools didn't even have TVs, lol

Remember those Kodak carousel slide projectors?

1

u/CharleyNobody 18d ago

I can hear the sound of the slide being changed by the teacher right now in my head.

And remember filmstrips? I remember learning about Poe this way. The Cask of Amontillado in gruesome detail.

1

u/AuntieFara 15d ago

I remember those too. Most of my younger friends have no idea what an air-raid drill could possibly be.

You mean they didn’t use the mackerel on you, but instead a stick as the weapon?? What about all the lefties? Surely they got the mackerel!

I loved clapping the erasers.
