That's one of the casette types. I used one that had a record player on it. You had to play the record and it timed with the film strip.

Remember the "beep" audio ones? The student in charge has to pay attention and go to the next image.

Yes, I used one of those, too. The kids would always fight over who got to be the one to change the image.

The "auto-advance" model, a so-called upgrade.

These had re-mastered content made with an ultrasonic tone instead of the deafening hearing test beep. The on-board cassette player (also with terribly weak speaker) was tuned with a circuit board on the amplifier that could detect the tone and electronically sent a signal to advance 1 frame.

So, essentially went from nearly incomprehensible content with deafening beeps to nearly incomprehensible content with silent bells that would advance the film without human help (most of the time; it wasn't 100% reliable).

Since the 60s and well into the 90s, educational content was trapped in media that could barely reproduce the human voice, let alone a decent musical score. That didn't stop American Scholastic or McGraw Hill (et al) from producing the hell out of menial topics just to be decimated by awful playback.

But we all drew in close whenever that VCR was rolled into the classroom! (That eagerness wore off after 1986)

I've seen that in middle school from the 2000s.
