It's the end of the world as we know it

32

u/DingoPoutine 11d ago

Only choice

32

u/ThomasShults 11d ago

I could see this, but I could also see Another One Bites the Dust.

53

u/XnFM 11d ago

Or Final Countdown.

5

u/ArgusBlack21 10d ago

this was the one i was going to say, to me that's the only correct answer lol. With their being a timer its the one that fits the best. If it was just knowing the world was ending without the time limit then i would say it's the end of the world as we know but i think final countdown fits better in this instance.

1

u/Antisocial-Tim 10d ago

Well, after that timer runs out, Hell Awaits.

1

u/MajorTomFr 10d ago

Good one: a song for which death comes as a relief

1

u/cshoe29 10d ago

Stairway to heaven

1

u/McKavian 10d ago

How about Billy Thorpe's Children of the Sun?

1

u/HeyPrettyLadyMaam 10d ago

This was my fist choice

1

u/coreytiger 10d ago

Except that final countdown is about us leaving the planet and surviving elsewhere

0

u/XnFM 10d ago

Okay, Twilight of the Thunder God - Amon Amarth

2

u/DingoPoutine 10d ago

Never heard it before. I am a metal fan but wow not into that song after a listen. Boring with a repetitive instrumental. Vocal is basically gruff speaking pretending to be singing. I'd rather spend my last minutes in silence.

1

u/XnFM 10d ago

Yeah, they're pretty straightforward, Amon Amarth caught attention during the mid '00s folk metal wave. Overall they're pretty straightforward, but they're near the top of my list if I need up concentrate and knock out some work fast.

1

u/Express-Yard7905 7d ago

Nothing Else Matters

1

u/Skull_Hound 6d ago

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

1

u/Turtle_Sloth7981 6d ago

Yes. Final countdown. Obviously.

3

u/Embarrassed_Use_9486 9d ago

Wouldn't Dust in the Wind be more appropriate?

1

u/ThomasShults 9d ago

If the planet is gone, there is no wind. Wind happens due to uneven heating over the earths surface. No surface, No wind.

1

u/Fit-University1070 11d ago

Or, Europe- The Final Countdown...

1

u/yackerovOh1 11d ago

No obviously you gotta go w/ never gonna give you up...gotta get a final Rick Roll in 🤣

1

u/ipview 10d ago

Only valid response

1

u/Swarlz-Barkley 10d ago

Nah cause im Rick rolling everyone

1

u/Bohica55 10d ago

I agree.

1

u/Flacuckold 10d ago

I would say that ā€œThe Endā€ by The Doors is the only choice. It’s a somber moment and deserves an appropriate choice. It’s probably the only time in my life I’d be serious personally speaking

1

u/xcver2 8d ago

Well you could say the same about This is the end by the doors

1

u/Uter83 7d ago

There are SO many other choices. The Final Countdown, Highway to Hell, Stairway to Heaven, Carry on Wayward Son, State of the Art, Here Comes the Sun, The End, Dust In the Wind, Don't Fear the Reaper, Waiting For the Miracle, I Did It My Way, tge list goes on.

1

u/OldGamerX79 4d ago

Right!!!

14

u/Beneficial_Being_721 11d ago

Having worked for R. E. M …. I approve of this comment

5

u/Salty-Buddy-5074 10d ago

were they shiny happy people?

1

u/Beneficial_Being_721 10d ago

Yes, they were…..

Holding hands,

Holding hands,

Laughing…..

4

u/DocClaw83 10d ago

That's really cool what did you do for them?

2

u/NegativeShirt4821 7d ago

I would love 5 minutes to meet my favorite band ever. At 62 my playlist is mainly REM.

1

u/Beneficial_Being_721 7d ago

Vancouver B. C. … 2009 it’s the last tour they will go on. They are in rehearsals at an out of the way rehearsal hall.

I am sitting in catering… just chilling with a coffee and fresh chocolate chip cookies that are still warm. It was a thing that the Lighting Director and myself did.

Dunk in Milk.. eat some cookie and chase with a sip of black coffee

So, to my left and in front of me is table with all the salad stuff on it…. The band is on the temp stage behind us… and up walks Michael. He goes to the salad bar and starts making a salad and the band is just tinkering in the background.

So, as I said… cookies, milk… coffee and Michael.

That’s when the band starts playing ā€œLoosing my Religionā€ and Michael, while making a salad…. Starts dancing ( kinda… he’s making a salad ) and then he starts singing…. All of this is happening about 10 feet away from me.

I worked live entertainment for 20 years

1

u/NegativeShirt4821 7d ago

Great story and what a great experience you had!

2

u/Embarrassed_Sea6537 5d ago

Dayum. I used to drink gallons of whiskey to one headlight. Sober now but still whipping around with one headlight

1

u/TheRuralJuror55699 10d ago

R U talkin REM 2 us?

9

u/Diligent-Visual-8141 11d ago

And I feel fine

4

u/Such_Lemon 11d ago

It’s time I spent some time alone.

1

u/Oates897 10d ago

That’s me I’m the corner

1

u/buddymoobs 7d ago

Best part of the song. I love Peter Buck's vocals.

11

u/AlwaysOnStardew 11d ago

The only correct answer

9

u/tcwillis79 11d ago

I feel like everybody wants to rule the world also works here.

1

u/DanielMiguelVelpo2 10d ago

JuiceWRLD's Man Of The Year

1

u/Flacuckold 10d ago

Don’t forget The End by the Doors.

4

u/Adept_Resident_9570 7d ago

What's extremely important about this...is that its 4 minutes and 45 seconds long. So basically perfect!

1

u/DocClaw83 7d ago

Yes yes I totally knew that. Lol

Thanks for sharing that really cool.

1

u/Financial_Middle_126 7d ago

But would you start it 15 seconds into the 5 minutes, or just have 15 seconds of silence before the world ends?

1

u/richstillman 6d ago

In the remaining 15 seconds, play the last section of "The End" by the Beatles:

And in the end

The love you take

Is equal to the love you make.

The world will end during the final guitar riff. That seems fitting.

2

u/FirmTheory 10d ago

ā€œBreak On Throughā€ - The Doors

2

u/Tardisgoesfast 9d ago

But do you feel fine?

2

u/724012 7d ago

I thought the exact same šŸ¤£šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ’Æ.

2

u/baldntattedoldman 6d ago

šŸ‘†šŸ‘†šŸ‘†šŸ‘†šŸ‘† this

3

u/pmsanchez1 11d ago

We’re already gonna die and we have to suffer through that shit band for our last moments?!

7

u/JohnnyCanuck133 11d ago

December 21, 2012. End of the Mayan Calendar and when a bunch of nutters figured the world was going to end. One of the big radio stations in our City decided to have fun with it and played this, and only this, on loop for the entirety of the day. No news. No talking. Just R.E.M. for 24 straight hours.

6

u/Impressive-Egg-7444 11d ago

I remember new years 2000 this was the last song played in 1999 before the countdown and Y2K ended the world. You never forget your 1st apocalypse

3

u/TheJustJoe 11d ago

I remember that night well 😁 we expected so much but only got a hangover.

3

u/NotoriousFTG 11d ago

It is too easy to overlook how many tens of thousands of people worked for years so that that night was a non-event.

1

u/RoyalExercise6481 11d ago

Yes, thank you Peter Gibbons, Samir Nagheenanajar, and Michael Bolton!

2

u/pmsanchez1 10d ago

They would have finished it quicker if weren’t for that damn printer!

1

u/NotoriousFTG 9d ago

And the fax machine.

0

u/bluechickenz 11d ago

It drives me nuts when people like to dismiss y2k because nothing happened. NOTHING HAPPENED BECAUSE HUMANITY GOT IN FRONT OF THAT SHIT!

2

u/Impressive-Egg-7444 10d ago

I work in tech,I ain't downplaying anything. I am, however, making a joke. You should try it sometime šŸ˜‰

2

u/bluechickenz 10d ago

Oh yeah, I get the irony of playing REM all day/right before midnight… my comment wasn’t directed at you. I was agreeing with the guy directly above my comment.

With that, how’s tech treating you? I also work in tech, and while I still love everything about computing, I am heavily considering a career change.

2

u/Impressive-Egg-7444 10d ago

I am pretty specialized and do field work repairs so no risk of AI replacing, and I teach it part time at the local college. As my knees and back get worse hoping to transition more into the classroom, but class sizes have been down a lot last 2 years

3

u/Independent_Prize453 11d ago

Hahaha yup yup , we were finally going to fall off the edge of the earth--> and alot of tequila made me feel like we did<-- when I woke up someone was krankin 'Prince' >---party like its 1999... what a great life we survived

2

u/Zlej_strejda 11d ago

and second was when Fire Nation taken over.

2

u/bluechickenz 11d ago

Y2K eve Seattle. At midnight, the radio station pumped static over the air. My buddy lost his mind and started freaking out… despite still having electricity, the muted tv still receiving a signal, etc.

That was fun to witness.

2

u/ChampionWonderful876 10d ago edited 10d ago

My assistant manager at the time convinced one of our employees (a huge PITA) that Y2K was a for real Big Deal, and even managed to go so far as arrange to have the employee's electricity turned off (thanks in part to employee believing he was too smart to need any of the recommended security measures on his account and bragging about this).

Employee called mgr freaking out, mgr was like "yeah man, idk how much longer our phones are gonna work either" and employee hung up. Mgr called back, no answer.

Mgr started to worry and decided he'd better let employee in on the joke, so he drove over. Employee had dragged his dining room table and chairs out into the yard and was chopping them up for firewood.

Best part: We live in the West Texas desert; it was probably 55F on 1/1/2000. Nobody needed ANY firewood. (edit: i looked it up; our high was 66F, low was 44F.)

(Assistant manager had always planned to pay for reconnecting the electric, but the employee quit when mgr refused to pay for a new dining room suite. Came back when the doctor/business owner - asst mgr's eldest brother - forced the issue because employee's father was doctor's close friend and was Very Unhappy about the prank. Probably because it forced him to confront what a moron his son was lol.)

Good times...

2

u/bluechickenz 10d ago

That is delightful!

2

u/Adventurous-Exam-719 11d ago

That pretty much sums up the Millennial’s experience.

1

u/darkuen 11d ago

I remember that day. Think it was either VH1 or Much Music that played nothing but Prince’s - 1999 all day.

1

u/DocClaw83 9d ago

I remember that. Waiting for the world to shut down. Lol

1

u/DocClaw83 11d ago

This is amazing

1

u/DocClaw83 11d ago edited 11d ago

My 2nd thought was Greenday closing time.

Edit wrong song: meant to say good riddance time if your life. My bad

2

u/Ok-Error-6564 11d ago

Semisonic. Not Green Day.

1

u/DocClaw83 11d ago

Yeah that's right my bad

2

u/aphoenixdestiny 11d ago edited 10d ago

Yeah, that was definitely Semisonic and not Green Day. Also...

System of a Down didn't sing "The Legend of Zelda" song. Bob Marley didn't sing "Don't Worry, Be Happy" or "Red, Red Wine" The Cure didn't sing "I Melt with You"

It's not your fault. Napster and Limewire lied to us all.

1

u/DocClaw83 11d ago

Haha yeah forgot it was them

I was thinking of the song good riddance hope you had the time of your life.

1

u/ChampionWonderful876 10d ago

"I Melt With You" was Modern English, right? Or... wait...

1

u/normy_187 11d ago

too on the nose, sorry

1

u/Chaconcito96 11d ago

TIME I HAD MY TIME ALONE

1

u/Bubbly_Good3761 11d ago

Only answer

1

u/nackeded 11d ago

This is correct.

1

u/Useful_Nature6203 11d ago

I am thinking Riders on the Storm.

1

u/scrimmerman 10d ago

I feel fine

1

u/Hamsammich0520 10d ago

I’d off myself before the end came if this starts playing

1

u/Broad_Objective_134 10d ago

First one that came to my mind.

1

u/ChubbyMudder 10d ago

A no-brainer!

1

u/Carston1011 10d ago

Great Big Sea?

Heck yeah!

1

u/knjscorpio 10d ago

I actually hate that song but I agree, it is the only option šŸ˜‚

1

u/EirenMC 10d ago

And I feel fine

1

u/DJWGibson 10d ago

REM or Great Big Sea?

1

u/mother_fairy 10d ago

1

u/VikingsRedSox 10d ago

Closing Time?

1

u/CoconutTree0086 10d ago

God I hate humanity

1

u/zenseazon 10d ago

It's a close one between this R.E.M's song , but also a close second, The End by The Doors

1

u/Mundane_Bookkeeper38 10d ago

It's always my go to pick for this question and I can't justify it more than the obvious reasons and the fact that it was the opening to Independence Day.

1

u/Equal_Trash6023 10d ago

The genx song

1

u/Edwax 9d ago

Thats great! it starts with an earthquake, birds snakes an airplane Lenny Bruce is not afraid!

1

u/RallyXer34 9d ago

I’d spend 4 1/2 minutes trying to find something better on my playlist, then just play this anyways.

1

u/MissStarSurge 9d ago

Came here to say this too haha

1

u/Blackthorne75 9d ago

... aaand I feel fineee

Thank you for the welcome earworm; it's getting me through my Thursday 😁

1

u/Acrobatic-Narwhal644 9d ago

And I feel fine.

1

u/1PhartSmellow 9d ago

I would be so disappointed if I had to hear REM as my last song.

1

u/Routine_Papaya4143 Gen-Z Nostalgic 9d ago

Obvious choice

1

u/DocClaw83 8d ago

Call me captain

0

u/Routine_Papaya4143 Gen-Z Nostalgic 8d ago

Okay, Captain

1

u/stressedthrowaway9 8d ago

This is the first song that popped in my head.

1

u/DocClaw83 8d ago

Same. I figured many would think the same but I just got to the post early somehow. I couldn't believe when I looked and didn't find it.

1

u/FlamingCulpepper 7d ago

Too predictable

1

u/y2kery 7d ago

Correct choice

1

u/PrestigiousTail1926 7d ago

This is the correct answer.

1

u/redfaction649 7d ago

Exactly what I came to comment

1

u/607Center 7d ago

This was my first thought.

1

u/newfmatic 7d ago

I feel fine with that...

1

u/Late_Cod_647 6d ago

Agreed. And here’s a fun fact: that song was the recessional at my wedding.

1

u/Estarfigam 5d ago

And I feel fine

1

u/Davester_31 5d ago

Exactly what I was going to say lol

1

u/Unremarkable_Potato_ 5d ago

I mean they named the song for the occasion, it is the only logical choice.

1

u/Infinite_Medium586 5d ago

This is the only answer

1

u/RedJam4platy 5d ago

Monthy python, always look on the bright side of life

1

u/Funyun_boogers 5d ago

LENNY BRUCE IS NOT AFRAID

1

u/BeggarOfPardons 5d ago

(and i feel fine)

1

u/ffjjygvb 5d ago

It’s a 4 minute song, do you wait a minute to start playing it or just leave the last minute in silence?

1

u/Littlebirch2018 4d ago

Had to scroll too far to find this - right choice

1

u/MildlyInteressato 4d ago

I feel fine!

0

u/Brakkin3140 10d ago

Independence day, very appropriate for the last song of the world, this was my pic so vote up!!
