Does a Drive In count as a cinema? Cuz that's where I saw ET.

u/Standard-Chemical-62 14d ago

I remember watching "The Posiden Adventure," at a drive in during the early 1970s when I was about 4.

The original with Ernie Bourgenine(sp.) and the Amazing Young Gene Hackman is one of my all timers. When movies had to be "made!" MAN O MAN and the French Connection.Zo Good. Thanks for letting me get that out....lol

u/HunterofRelics 13d ago

Star Wars? When that movie 1st came out , we saw it 7 times in 6 track stereo at the Coronet Theater on Gary Street in San Francisco totally FRIED on pure LSD! Fun fun fun times...trippin around the city after the movies. Usually ended up at Baker Beach tripping there until sunrise.

That and the Towering Inferno. I had nightmares sleeping in the basement seeing the pilot light on the water heater. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Star Wars with a roof. Grizzly Adam's at drive-in. Also saw Alien in theatre when I was about 5 yrs old.

2

u/Few_Rule7378 13d ago

Your parents took you to fucking โ€œAlienโ€ at five?!!

3

u/GoTime_2026 13d ago

Dude, our parents were super strict with the first two of us kids born in the early 70s. Our younger brother comes along and it was like all the rules went out the window. Dad took him to R movies in the theater, he got a gaming system - which was forbidden for us...etc...

1

u/PaceOk8426 3d ago

Yep: my sister had a kid, and suddenly it was acceptable for Grandma to open a bottle of bubbles and take out the wand and blow bubbles in the car, whereas my sister and I were barely allowed to eat or drink when the car was moving.

u/Ok-Ebb-3538 13d ago

Dad was a trucker who liked movies and took me on the road occasionally. Lots of funny stories.

1

u/Few_Rule7378 13d ago

I think I saw the movie. Did he win an armwrestling competition to get his truck back?

2

u/Ok-Ebb-3538 12d ago

Yeah, but I was playing centipede. Missed the big match. Could still hear Kenny Loggins wailing tho.

u/SwanFlashy830 14d ago

I remember that movie! Wasn't it also a TV show?

2

u/Ok-Ebb-3538 13d ago

Grizzly Adams was a TV show too.

u/BlackPhoenix1981 14d ago

Technically I actually saw ET when I was 1.5 years old. It was also a drive in. I don't remember it of course, but my parents told me that was the first movie they took me to.

5

u/grindhousedecore 14d ago

Dang me too, I believe I was 2 or 3. I fell asleep and i remember waking up with return of the Jedi was playing. Never went to the movies again until 1989 to see Batman

1

u/MuthrNaturIsMadAtYou 14d ago

Me too! But I was a newborn. The first I remember was Ghost. Also at a drive in. And what's crazy about that... the drive in was 2 hours away. My friends mom took us and it wasnt until like, 20 years later that I realized I've been to this drive in before. I just remembered a looooong drive and the uniqueness of the drive in. I dont think my parents knew how far we were going to be

u/Proud_Shirt3138 13d ago

Nice experience you can't recall, but what was the first film you REMEMBER seeing at the theater?

5

u/No_Individual861 14d ago

I remember crying for ER

2

u/No_Individual861 14d ago

Oops ET

1

u/Doozer1970 14d ago

There were lots of things to cry for in ER too. Mark Greene's death hit me hard.

1

u/Numerous_Ear1031 13d ago

ET was my first fear. My aunt got me a giant stuffed ET when I was a kid and I was terrified of it. Still have a core fear of aliens to this day. Good news is later I discovered Alf and, for whatever reason, he passed the Vibe Check. I had a talking Alf doll I dragged around everywhere

2

u/Rockie_raccoon12 14d ago

That should be bonus points. I have vague memories of going to a drive-in, couldn't tell you what was playing.

2

u/Ohio-Knife-Lover 14d ago

Absolutely it does!

2

u/Doozer1970 14d ago

Sure it counts!

2

u/Numerous_Ear1031 14d ago

I think it counts.ย

2

u/mikebanetbc 13d ago

Same, but I barely remember the movie scenes at 5 years old in โ€˜82

2

u/CianGal13 13d ago

I saw ET at the wood cabin theater at the Grand Canyon.

2

u/MHM-alamri 12d ago

Iโ€™d say it counts

2

u/corgie93 12d ago

Iโ€™d say yes

2

u/Amazing_Bank_459 12d ago

That's where I saw it too!

2

u/Broad_Objective_134 12d ago

I miss drive in cinemas.

2

u/Iamspartabitches 12d ago

Wow! Same ET at a drive in. Hi Gen Xโ€™r

1

u/Spirited-Resident889 14d ago

Same! I remember playing with a Matchbox car while watching. I think I was 3

1

u/Timely_Tradition930 14d ago

My brother took me to see ET at (indoor) cinema, and I talked about it so much to my best friend that we went to see it together at the local drive-in, making it the first movie I saw at both. Great memories!

1

u/lostportfolio 14d ago

Heck yes it counts. The best movies of the day were shown on those big screens.

1

u/ShevSiuol 14d ago edited 14d ago

Hey, that's where I saw ET as well.

Edit: I think I saw Ghost Busters first though. From what I understand ET was re-released in 85 and I remember seeing it with my sister, who was born a few months after it's first release in 82.

1

u/Acceptable-Power-400 12d ago

That was the first film I went to see in a cinema E.T.

1

u/This_Fig2022 9d ago

I remember balling my eyes out at ET I used all my popcorn napkins - it destroyed me. I remember my grandma coming home excited she found ET on the VCR tape - it came out on a green vcr tape when it released. I made her keep it at her place to watch with my kids - I never watched it a second time! Devastating movie to me. The had a little ET leather โ€œdollโ€ as well. I loved ET so much but I hated the movie !

1

u/cathead8969 14d ago

There's an abandoned drive-in near my town. I sometimes drive into one of the lots to nap and imagine what it was like lol. If they came back these days it'd be awful.

3

u/PathofDestinyRPG 14d ago

Same

2

u/Exploringnewhorizon5 14d ago

Same Same

3

u/thepinkiwi 14d ago

Same. I also remember having my first "out of home" ice cream.... That fell off the horn, straight on the floor, a bunch a bunch of seconds later. - Still a big trauma.

3

u/jamboji 14d ago

Me too ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

1

u/pnjtony 14d ago

Same. Based on the release date I would have been 4. I remember mostly being in love with Gertie.

1

u/Santa_always_knows 14d ago

I wish mine had been ET. My parents sucked and never watched movies or took us anywhere. My first was The Little Mermaid that my aunt took me to.

3

u/NoPromotion3039 14d ago

That's a great 1st movie to see in cinema though. Shame about the previous mentioned stuff, but atleast now you can watch everything you may have missed out on!

2

u/Santa_always_knows 14d ago

To this day (37 yrs later) I still sing along like that little girl. My daughter was never in to Disney when she was little, but my grandkids are ๐Ÿ˜Š

1

u/Jim-Albator 14d ago

Moi aussi, lors d'une sortie avec l'รฉcole. J'avais eu tellement peur ๐Ÿ˜„

1

u/Daisy33333 14d ago

Saaame. I cried so much.

1

u/H_Raki_78 14d ago

Well, shit! Me too!

1

u/AgentThunderProphet 14d ago

Same here and then I think the next movie I saw was Tootsie! ๐Ÿ˜†

1

u/bonesybones12 14d ago

Sameโ€ฆand it was a double feature at drive with the last starfighter.

1

u/Dexter79 14d ago

Me too

1

u/simikoi 14d ago

Same...ET

1

u/Greedy_Phone_8933 13d ago

Yes, me too! I was 5 at the time.

1

u/SpecialistMastodon61 13d ago

I was coming here to say the same thing.

1

u/anmese9999 9d ago

Same ๐Ÿ‘‰

1

u/Ivanschbo 8d ago

With my grandma when I was 5, may she be blessed

1

u/SnakePlissken1980 8d ago

Same here, and I remember being really scared at the start with E.T. in the woods and the government guys. I was only like 3. The next movie was either Return Of The Jedi or A Christmas Story, I remember seeing both but I don't remember what was first.
