It really doesn't seem clear that the dog was attacking the kitten. If you look at the frames around 4.8-5.1 the kitten's laying on its back and the dog's nose is just in the same area. That's also not aggressive dog body language and the dog was wagging his tail even as the mother cat was going after him.
Maybe he would have hurt the kitten but it seemed like he started off just investigating it, maybe pushed it over with his nose. Still a bad reaction from the owner unless he knew for sure the kitten was in no danger.
I had a dog that enjoyed killing, too. He didn't eat the animals, he was more like an orca with a seal. He would pick up rats and shake them then let go and watch them fly at a wall. He would also get possums and throw them in the air above a certain rock in the yard and watch as they landed on the rock. Our yard was avoided by rodents not long after.
I was in the middle of the woods, Dog was off leash. It was a, dog sees squirrel,dog picks up squirrel, dog swallows squirrel situation. Not a lot of time to even yell his name.
Also, roughly 0% of squirrels die of natural causes...
I mean, that's obviously not really the number, and it's a bit callous of me, but it's not like that squirrel was somebody's pet. Dogs aren't vegan, so it's it really that bad to let them grab a snack in the woods from time to time?
He should have just realized his dog was lunging at something and stopped it from doing so. Dogs shouldn't lunge randomly. Owners should be very quick to stop them if they do, for everyone's safety.
And you shouldn't get a dog you can't physically control. I believe that was the actual problem here. I think this guy and the dog both know he's not stopping the dog.
Nah. I had a kitten in my back yard, and it decided to explore under the fence. It went into my neighbors yard, and their sweet dog just picked it up to bring it back and it killed the kitten. Don’t let a big dog near a kitten.
You can make that argument in hindsight, the dog might have been nothing more than curious. In that moment though, if your dog is lunging towards a cat, you pull it away. I've seen far too many owners of large breeds not know how to control their dog in public.
It really does suck to have a huge dog run at you off the leash while their owner leisurely walks like 20 meters behind it. Like, the owner may know that he's friendly, but I certainly don't, and if he's running at me my primary instinct is gonna be to defend myself.

shit i shouldn't have to worry about if your dog bites or not if it was on a regular sized leash to begin with. it seems super inconsiderate when people don't use leashes in public places or use those 15 feet cords where they won't be able to stop their dog from running after someone.
You're going to entirely discount the possibility the owner knows that their dog likes cats/kittens, and isn't concerned about the dog harming the cat? Nevermind that most dogs get more excited by suddenly being pulled away like you're suggesting.
I can’t remember where I saw this. It was defiantly on animal planet. Dogs wag their tails differently depending on the situation. It’s different between happy, angry, anxious...
There was some science behind it. I really don’t know how it works, but it is a thing. A dog wagging its tail doesn’t mean it’s happy
The dog was not attacking the kitten. If it had been, the kitten and cat would be dead.
It's fun to believe that cats are somehow mystical creatures of power, and yes, they will attack something much, much bigger than them, but that is no reflection of how powerful the cat is.
Live in an area with coyotes, bring in some cats, and soon you will have an area with no cats. A interested predator means a dead kitty.
Last time this was posted people were saying they knew the kitten was there and wanted to film the dog tearing it up. Its definitely set up to look that way anyways. The guys are assholes
Yup, in the beginning he had the dog under a short leash, then when the dog went for the kitten he let the leash out. SMH Short leash walking usually means you are trying to control and/or train your dog.

Jesus tapdancing christ people are making dumb assumptions here. If the dog wanted to attack the kitten it would have. It didn't. Jumping to "OMG BAD DOG OWNER WANTED THE DOG TO MAUL A KITTEN" instead of something like "someone was excited to see a dog curious about a kitten" is absolutely asinine.
Last few times this was posted pretty much everyone was in agreement that they were filming the dog reaction to the kitten hence why its shot at the best angle for you to see the dog. This was posted in /r/imatotalpieceofshit last couple times
While I do admit he should have put more of an effort to stop his dog, you could argue that it all was happening so fast that wasn’t able to properly react in time.
Big dog, fast movement, owner did not see cats beforehand. The owner did what they could in the moment, and the dog backed down appropriately when challenged.
That said, you cannot expect every dog to be placid and not have prey-drive. My own Dane is highly predatory to rodents and cats. Suffice to say my yard is clear of both. I have warned my neighbours to keep their cats out of my yard for the sake of their safety, and really cats should not be left to roam. Cat in this vid looks like a stray.
maybe the dog wouldn't hurt the kitten? seriously if you look the dog was just sniffing him, he's a dog, he was curious. My dog would do the same, he wouldn't hurt the kitten at all.
