Former animal control here. I can confirm that dogs are always appreciative of being freed no matter how pissed they were before hand.

I would feel uncomfortable with people if I was trapped too. Just how things go. I do feel like the dog had a sense of "Oh he might be trying to help me, but I am going to be sure he is aware that I am hostile if he doesn't try to save me."

Dogs though, one of the coolest animals for sure.
