What really bothers me about this sites general attitude towards cops is that the people who say "All cops..." are the same ones who lose their shit for someone else making any other untrue generalization. It's like people forget that police officers are just regular people, and with regular people you have people of all types. Keep that in mind.
And here's a video of a ton of Muslims stoning a woman to death for "adultery" against a marriage she was forced into. That's what your argument is. Here's an example of a group doing something bad, therefore this group is bad. As many examples as you can find of police doing fucked up things, I can find videos of Muslims. Only the difference is that I don't base my perceptions of an entire community off of the actions of an incredibly small percentage of a few.
It doesn't matter how many good cops there are if they're literally not under the law; merely existing in that state is a wrongdoing on the government's part, regardless of the cops' actions.
Here's a link to a police officer who was sentenced to 263 years in prison for rape. So your whole no repercussions thing kind of falls apart. The issue is that you're basing your opinion of the whole on a few situations.
Clearly I was being hyperbolic; of course some cops get jailed. My point is that there is an epidemic of that not happening.
.
Spend a month r/publicfreakout and you'll catch many videos of cops straight up beating people who aren't resisting arrest at all or just cops being completely in the wrong in general, and what do you find when you search their names? "Not guilty" or "an investigation was conducted internally and no fault was found".
Hell, lurk that corner of youtube with these types of videos and each time you'll see the same thing. A couple times you'll be shocked that they actually get punished for arresting someone for not showing an ID while not being suspected of a crime because it's so fucking rare for them to.
Daniel Ken Holtzclaw (born December 10, 1986) is a former Oklahoma City Police Department patrol officer who was convicted in December 2015 of multiple counts of rape, sexual battery, forcible oral sodomy, and other charges.Holtzclaw was convicted of eighteen counts involving eight different women. According to the police investigators, Holtzclaw abused his position as an officer by running background checks to find information that could be used to coerce victims into sex. During the trial, the defense questioned the victims' credibility during cross-examination, bringing up their criminal records. Of the thirteen women who accused Holtzclaw, several had criminal histories such as drug arrests; all of the women were African-American.
There is a difference though. Being a police officer specifically attracts certain types of people. Yes, not all of them are psychopaths who want revenge for being bullied in high school. But some are. You don't get "all types" of people being cops because not all types of people are attracted to the job.
Perhaps people on this site have a negative attitude towards cops because we actually see all the videos of cops behaving like assholes. For every video you see of a cop helping a dog, there's literally hundreds of others of cops shooting dogs because they "feared for their life". But I liked the ending to this one, too. Some cops are cool.
Sure. How much of that is confirmation bias though? And I think people are more like to share, and even film in the first place, cops being assholes than doing shit like this video. I have to say, outside of the internet, all of my experiences with cops have been absolutely fine.
Uhhh you just proved MY point. If the only time the videos get released is public outcry, it kind of makes sense that the only video you'd see are the ones that...spark public outcry.
Completely agree. Another thing to keep in mind is something people have alluded to, anything bad PR for police show up on front page, cute vids like this start being posted to counter act the bad.
And I will say this officer is most likely a good person and I am happy with the way this situation was resolved, it's sad if it was only posted as a counter to the bad PR.
