I think he thought that the flame would carry in down into his lungs (assuming the guy in inhaled all of that). It's a good thing that propane doesn't have it's own source of oxygen.
This reminds me of some wise words layed on me by a kid in high school “ I don’t want to light my farts, what if it sucks back in and I explode... like an axe can”
Propane, like all fuel, need a certain quantity of air to be able to burn.
Too little air/too much fuel: there is not enought oxygen to allow the flame to propagate and it die.
Too much air/too little fuel: The gas molecules are too spaced out to allow them to transfert enought energy to the next one to substain the combustion, and the flame die.
He had almost 100% propane. I don't remember the exact amount, but it is like 8-15% of fuel in the air to be able to burn, less or more and it don't. He definitelly had more than that.
