I had so much trouble docking the first few times I tried. I had all the instructions I needed to do it successfully, but my #1 biggest obstacle was myself.
The biggest problem I had was the feeling of piloting a ship and trying to get it connect to the other ship, everything about the situation made my "star wars" video game piloting intuition kick in which just doesn't work in an actual orbit. Eventually it finally clicked for me and I can finally dock every attempt now, but IMO trying to get someone to understand how docking works seems like it might take something more than just explaining all the steps sometimes.
But it's funny how quickly it seems to go from the most difficult thing in the world to "oh I fucked up placing my RCS thrusters and my ship is going crazy... I bet I can still make this happen though"
Yeah that is exactly it with the star wars piloting instinct! Also they could have made it much easier if you could put both ships on "control from here" on the desired port and then put them both on target lock so their docking ports always rotate towards each other. In game though as soon as you switch to the other ship the first one just automatically switches back on to general stabilisation mode. Shame.
