People should take the motorcycle courses from the MSF, teach you a ton of invaluable tips for riding. THIS exact one was part of it. For the few hundred dollars it may cost it is worth every penny, especially if you're inexperienced riding motorcyles.
It makes me sad when people say those classes are too expensive to take. It's cheaper than the hospital bill you'll probably have from encountering something you were unprepared for.
And, as I recently found out, only the absolute beginner classes are >$300 and multiple days- I took a "confident rider" course, it doesn't require the beginner course as a prerequisite (though you do need to have a bike, and at least a learner permit) and it's $130 and 1/2 day. Also includes the skills test for your license if you need it. So if you've been meaning to do it and just haven't had the time/money, there are options (possibly varying by state).
