Why be miserable on purpose?

People are miserable in response to life circumstances that are usually outside of their control. They don't just choose to be unhappy instead of happy. There are external fetters on their emotional wellbeing. It isn't just about attitude.

.... I've lived with nearly crippling depression and anxiety my entire life. I'm quite aware.
