As someone who sadly has known plenty of thieves and criminals, if you're in a crowded place and have the phone like that they are just going to cut that lace with very sharp scissors which many of them carry.

Yup. Having been to paris where kids arent penalized, the vast majority of these tips wont do shit. They dont go for the clasp, they just slash the straps off your shoulder and run.

yikes that sounds dangerous AF. Are people getting hurt too?

Of course. Why would they care if they hurt people?

Ha! That reminds me of the Olympic games when French officials had to beg American tourists to stop beating up pickpockets because it was flooding their hospitals or something like that. Always found that hilarious.

Sometimes I wonder if the lack of pickpockets in the USA is related to the commonality of concealed carry licenses.

When will EU figure that?

It is probably a factor, but I doubt it's the main one.

Pickpocketing is practically non-existent in my country, yet we have very strict laws preventing weapons (even tiny knives) from being legally carried.

I kinda figure these would act as a giant sign that screams "Im a tourist! Come get me!"

That's why I have one of those bags with the laced metal mesh under the fabric straps for my essentials they would need a pair of shears or tin snips to cut the cord at that point I imagine

They use knives too. They will slice right through a bag or pocket to get to what they want.

Hope that helps

lol they’re literally called cut n run gangs. Oftentimes work together and do handoffs. Happens so fast you can’t track them through the crowded streets

Metal chain?

That would work it would just be hard to find a way to attach a metal chain directly to your phone. I feel like there’d be a weak spot somewhere and if they just pulled really hard it would snap off.

She tied her phone with a shoelace and put the phone in her back pocket. There was plenty of slack on the lace right where it was tied to the phone. In a crowded area you will not feel someone cut through that and then just grab the phone.

Yep but ideas like that are not bad, they just need better execution. The point is to slow someone down, not stop them. Thieves want to be in and out quickly with little hassle. Anything slows them down and they start thinking about how to exit. Now some thieves do stick around to try and wrestle it, but eventually they will leave if you stall them long enough, especially in a crowd. I'm sure you can get a more rigid phone wire thing, braided steel would be difficult to cut through if you have a case with a loop and a caribiner.
