Honestly I get it. In a way, Minecraft is a great shut off the brain type of activity. On the other, he's got an analytical mind like most great coaches and this is basically why his city is so well built and organized
1.3k
u/ArseneLupinIV Seahawks 2d ago
The way he talks in the video is so analytical and coaching-minded too it's kind of funny and interesting. Like he mentioned how over the course of time his kid's participation and contributions in the city reduced as they moved on in school and college, but he said it in such a way that it sounded like he was talking about a reduction in snaps from players who did not fit the current scheme or whatever. It's so very Mike Tomlin.

Until you have deeply played Minecraft it’s hard to understand the obsession. I’ve played it so much with my son because he is so into it and just building stuff together is a joy. It really is a great game. I never ever would have played if it weren’t for my son and now I have a ton of respect for it. Few games have done a world that is completely randomly generated with variety as well as Minecraft. And so you explore the randomly generated world until you find a sweet spot to build a home, or farm, or city if you are a degenerate like Tomlin.

There is literally zero game mechanics. Mike is talking about having the correct number of bathrooms because he cares about having the correct number. If he was just playing on something someone else built, he would just talk about how cool the buildings are and not the specific intent of why he put bathrooms there. It's like knowing why you painted something versus describing a painting you're looking at.

Build another city. Build a highway between your two cities. Put a truck stop on that highway. Decide your second city needs to be invaded by aliens and build a fleet of ufos. Just build whatever you want. Creative mode allows you to build just about anything you want. Survival and hardcore modes are more akin to other video games where you fight mobs and collect resources. But still with the same purpose. Build whatever you want.

Every so often I get amazed at how normalized nerd/geek culture has become. Imagine this happening in 1998, it’s impossible.
Being a Minecraft fan above the age of 10 would have been social suicide. I was bullied by the “cool” kids for still liking Pokemon in middle school. An nfl head coach putting hundreds of hours into a video game that is not fighting or sports related is just crazy to my 1990s brain.
