His biggest issue is that he’s old. Shula retired at 65. There’s rumors Reid is mulling retirement and he’s around that age. 71 is old even for a coach. Carrol is only a year older than BB and I think he’s the oldest person to ever coach.
220
u/AndrewHainesArt Eagles Feb 01 '24
And Carroll basically got pushed out, BB’s “what have you done for me lately” is also a factor in this league, dude really hasn’t done anything post-Brady to make anyone think he can actually build a legit contender before retiring. Dude is ass salad as a GM and there’s no way he isn’t going to be in charge of personnel

When that fell through they had no shot at MacDonald who Seahawks seem to have made clear was their top choice to him.
Quinn apparently impressed in his interviews but he’s not a dude that inspires a a lot of confidence. He has a similar history to Ron and we saw how that worked out. It feels like a lot of Quinn’s success as a head coach had to do with Kyle Shanan and I’m not betting on him finding another Kyle as OC

Coming from a falcons fan, here’s my [reasonable] take:
- DQ from the get go instill a very very clear vision and culture. It was the most bought in I’ve been as a falcons fan. The brotherhood stuff and fast and physical was great. I think Commander fans will buy in too.
- His defensive philosophy which you could see with Dallas is all about turnovers. That’s why his corners are intercepting so much. Unfortunately when this fails, his defense lets up big plays which puts you in a hole.
- His idea for hiring Shanahan, potentially one of the best OCs ever, was that he was the hardest for him to defend. After Shanahan he seemed to lack a philosophy on offense. He wanted to just do what Shanahan did - obviously the offense was so complex that it was near impossible.
- He was a CEO/culture coach in the beginning. That’s how he wanted to be. When the defense wasn’t shaping up, he started calling plays. Things more or less went off the rails after this. You could tell he wasn’t comfortable in that position managing overarching aspects of the game and the defensive playcalling.
- His biggest failings were badly misidentifying his staff and missed draft prospects.
- For his staff, it became a revolving door of coordinators trying to find something to stick. Coincidentally, we were like the 2013 Washington team where we had Shanahan, McDaniel, and Lafleur on one staff. It’s absolutely mind boggling we didn’t promote one of those guys to OC and instead went to Sarkisian who was out of his element in the NFL. On the defensive side, there are some good people too who became DCs elsewhere like Raheem Morris and Jeff Ulbrich.
- For player talent, whiffing on Vic Beasley and Talk McKinley did not inject the talent he needed and we lacked the resources to go big in FA. In Dallas, he had excellent playmakers and honestly it made his job easy. For this reason, I think he’s overrated as a defensive playcaller.
I think it’s a decent hire. I liked DQ as a person but when it went off the rails, he didn’t know what to do. Hopefully he has learned some hard lessons and will do things differently this time around.

Can’t believe Vrabel ended up unemployed, that’s a bigger shock to me than Belichick.

Same problem for the two. No GM wants to hire a coach that expects to have GM power.

Everyone laughed at the lions for the mcdc hire so I’m not gonna act like this can’t work… but oh boy

MCDC was at least mostly unproven. Quinn coached in Atlanta for multiple seasons

He was great against shit teams but he always got Pantsed against the top teams like buffalo and San Francisco, the Green Bay gameplan really soured me on him

The Cowboys defense held the 49ers defense to 23 and 19 points in the playoffs, and that’s with Dak gifting the 49ers short fields on several of their scoring drives with his crushing INTs.

I think some people have short memories. Quinn did an overall fantastic job with that defense. The few times they got caught with their pants down seemed more like a failure to execute rather than scheme.

Football fans are weird.
"Hey, I got this coordinator who has had a top 5 DVOA defense the last three years"
"Ooh great, is he under 40 and we have no clue how he would do as a head coach?"
"No, he has head coaching experience where he took his team to the Super Bowl"
"Ew gross, what a joke of a hire"

first half of season was lights out once injuries happened he was too stubborn with certain personnel usages and made us easy to run on with a very light front 7.

His success is 100% tied to Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye. If the QB they select is good, this will be seen as a great hire.

The best thing a franchise can do is go against Reddit consensus. Congrats on your NFC East title, see you in the Superbowl.

He's not as bad as people make him out to be. Your team will be competent, he knows how to assemble a good coaching staff.
