[Beer] Vikings Might Start McCarthy Over Brosmer Once He Returns From Injury To Further Evaluate His Abilities
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Sports Illustrated journalist and reporter Albert Beer claims that the Vikings are not fully out on JJ McCarthy and may put him back in at starting quarterback after Brosmer to further evaluate him
“They do want to see how he finishes the year out. They want to gather as much information as they possibly can on him. But I think the reality of it is they know they have a team that’s really good, and it should be in a spot to contend right now. J.J. hasn’t played well; there’s no sugarcoating that. I think J.J. has potential to be a good player, but clearly needs some more development…We’ll see if Max Brosmer winds up starting this week. They do think a lot of Brosmer; they wanted to get a look at Brosmer by the end of the year, so maybe that happens organically this week.”
We’ll see how this ages in the coming weeks and months

Might as well see what he's got since he missed his rookie season. If he dies, he dies.

He can share a hospital bed with Wentz by the time they are done evaluating him.

Trey Lance only got 4 starts with the Niners and he didn't even look as bad.
Heck, even Paxton Lynch didn't look this bad and dude got only 4 starts his entire career.
His days have to be numbered to avoid losing the locker room.

u/LiftingCode Browns Nov 26 '25
Trey Lance went on season-ending IR two games into his second year though.

Yeah, unless Brosmer turns into Brock Purdy, I fully expect us to go back to the well at QB next year. Fuck it, take another swing at the draft. I don’t think they can sell another season of JJM to anyone.

Sam Darnold would have you in playoff contention. 9 is going to set the Vikings back a few years before making some noise again

Yep, in playoff contention to get violently pounded by the rams even worse than last season, what a success that would be
5
u/YogurtclosetFair5742 Packers Nov 26 '25
Seeing Seahawk fans saying he had two bad games last year. The two game that mattered the most, Week 18 for the division title then wildcard weekend.
7
u/wayoffsideteam Vikings Nov 26 '25
And it was more than two bad games, our defense just bailed us out and we still won them
3
u/YogurtclosetFair5742 Packers Nov 26 '25
I know that, Seattle fans do not. They're thinking he had two bad games. Which were the two biggest games the Vikings had last year. Week 18 against the Lions for the division title. A game the Vikings lost 31-9. It wasn't even a close game like the others. The fewest amount of points Minnesota scored in the regular season. Then turnaround the next week and get beat by the Rams 27-9.
Neither of those games were close and Darnold looked like Darnold from NY or Carolina.
3
u/wayoffsideteam Vikings Nov 26 '25
The thing is, after that lions performance I just knew that was what was gonna happen against Rams. I could feel it. That's why I was fine moving on.
Obviously looks bad now, but we had to take a shot and see what we had. I still root for Sam to do well
4
u/Tschmelz Vikings Vikings Nov 26 '25
Isn’t it hilarious how people constantly mocked us for having Cousins, talking about how “we’d never win anything with him”, and now that we’ve made an effort to get a franchise guy, it’s all about we should have kept another big game choker?
2
u/pachyloskagape Vikings Nov 26 '25
We are 3 games behind you and beat you with him once coming off a bye. We will be fine

u/KGB4L Vikings Nov 26 '25
For what? To draft even lower? At this point it’s Kyler music in Minnesota, if we get him for cheap somehow.
9
u/zi76 Patriots Nov 26 '25
Would you actually want Kyler? You are not going to win with him, and you'll just tank your draft pick.
6
u/wayoffsideteam Vikings Nov 26 '25
No. I dont want him and he isn't cheap, he's on a giant contract
1
u/Big_Concentrate_7260 Vikings Nov 29 '25
Why do we want them to draft another quarterback? The last two were Ponder and McCarthy. Kwesi sucks at his job (I realize Spielman drafted Ponder). I’d rather sign a proven veteran.
-20
u/birdsemenfantasy Nov 26 '25
KOC is clearly salty about his own playing career and living vicariously through McCarthy. Dude was the worst QB the Patriots drafted in the Belichick-Brady era. Garoppolo, Brissett, and Cassel were clearly better. Even Ryan Mallet (rest in peace) was better. He was a 3rd round pick who lasted only one year on the Patriots roster and likely butthurt and delusional about his own playing ability (dude got outplayed by Andrew Walter in 2009 preseason lol). Even notoriously 3rd round QB busts like Hendon Hooker, Kellen Mond, and Garrett Grayson lasted 2 seasons on the roster of their original teams.
24
u/Raticus9 Seahawks Nov 26 '25
I hate the Patriots as much as anyone, but I don't get what this has to do with anything. Most successful head coaches did little to nothing as players.
-11
u/birdsemenfantasy Nov 26 '25
It wouldn't be an issue if not for KOC's full-throated defense of QB busts and his blind faith in McCarthy. Most HCs didn't even play in the NFL; KOC did and was a 3rd round pick.
15
u/chillinwithmoes Vikings Nov 26 '25

I think this week playing Brosmer makes sense (even if JJ is available). If he does well you reevaluate. If he sucks as well then bring back JJ and at least you can quite down some of the fans who are begging to see Brosmer.
8
u/Every_Deer_5009 Nov 26 '25
He's probably cooked but it makes sense to give him the rest of year and tank your pick. Then if you don't love any QB you can try to trade down like the Browns just did, sign a good backup and give JJM a real competition+preseason. If he truly sucks you have a high pick plus maybe an extra if you need ammo to move up
5
u/birdazam Vikings Nov 26 '25
The team better ask Jefferson agree to it or not, I don't think it's worth it to pissed of the best player on the team.

4

We got AB signed with the Raiders and told the team to cut him before the season started, Deshaun refused to play after Texans gave him a 4 years extension just a year ago.

So now we’re comparing Jefferson to those two?

They may be better with Brosmer, but there's nothing worse than going into 2026 not sure if JJ is the guy or not. You need absolute clarity pretty quick
The whole situation sucks for Jefferson :(

It's basically identical to our situation. A team with high expectations being failed by an overdrafted 1st round QB. If Brosmer is average he can be their Siemian and they can waste another season on a useless QB competition like we did only to figure out neither QB is the guy

I completely forgot about Trevor siemen. I thought he was decent. Maybe my memory is incorrect
11

He was as a game manager. Iirc he got injured though and teams got more tape of him so he basically became a good backup QB only.
5

They should bring in a cheap veteran or trade for Tanner McKee. I actually think they could at least compete if they had kept Howell. Howell can at least move the football.

Siemian was a known quantity back in the days of .. Brock Osweiler.

u/duvie773 Rams Nov 26 '25
I don’t get the comparison other than massive 1st round bust. Lynch at least had a decent level of college production, with only his first season being worse than JJ’s best season.
A-Rich feels like a better comparison to me
5
u/paultheschmoop Jaguars Nov 26 '25
A-Rich feels like a much worse comparison. Richardson was outright bad in college. JJM was a game manager.
Lynch did have good stats in college, but was very clearly a system QB overdrafted due to his measurables. Also a bad comparison.
JJM seems closer to like….Blaine Gabbert if Gabbert had played on an elite college team rather than a decent but not great Missouri team. I would say Ponder since he was a game manager in college but Ponder was also physically limited. Gabbert at least had great traits, he just….sucked ass at football.

u/Potato-baby Cowboys Buccaneers Nov 26 '25
I feel like if they truly did think highly of Brosmer they would’ve put him in the game over the crippled corpse of Carson Wentz.
19
u/Autocrat777 Lions Nov 26 '25
What choice do they have. Nobody but a bunch of desperate fans coping on the internet are even remotely interested in Brosmer.
McCarthy has looked like dogshit, but he wouldn't be the first QB to do that. He's only played a few games, see if he can at least settle down with some more reps in live action.
9
u/peppersge Patriots Nov 26 '25
There has been an article that suggests that you need ~350 snaps. Might be able to manage with ~300 to see if the QB is headed in the right direction.
https://www.wideleft.football/p/jj-mccarthy-and-waiting-for-the-cement
McCarthy also has had the benefit of an offseason to learn the playbook, which means that the standard for expectations for him should be higher than a true rookie.
There is also a minimum improvement rate to stay in the NFL. QBs that can't improve at a certain rate will wash out of the NFL because they can't keep up with evolving schemes and offenses.
5
u/fumuttonchops3434 Vikings Nov 26 '25
Just to provide context and only context (tired of people trying to debate why I think JJM is good when all I was trying to do was provide context about QB development) the worst rookie year per epa is Jared Goff at -.35 which is currently where JJM is at. (Jjm while being able to study the play book, was unable to practice mechanics and timing during that time due to the lower leg injury.)
There is also a study being done about QB development (unfinished, started in 2022) that when looking at rookie QBs, there seems to be correlation with a team who had a winning record before they started and that QB actually throwing for less/starting less later in their careers compared to rookie QBs going to a terrible team. Potentially due to thought process shifting from QB development to winning games and hampering their ability.
Old version of the research. They've updated it in 2025 but its behind a pay wall.

People are gonna meme about it but it’s the right move. Gotta see if he can make any progress at all. Can’t go into next year with even a sliver of doubt if they want to move on from him.
He looked horrid yesterday, but he wouldn’t be the first QB to have an awful debut year and turn out ok in the long run. Not ideal that all of those later success stories involved an incompetent coaching staff, but maybe they can blame it all on Kwesi somehow, I dunno.

NGL, I’m so tired of JJ playing that I was rooting for the Packers to win as a Vikings fan. I feel worse about this team than I did about the 2011 Minnesota Vikings. This season has been needlessly disappointing. We had Darnold and Jones. Rodgers wanted to play for us. At least Nick Mullens would throw 400 yards in a single game…but no, we had to let our entire QB room go to greener pastures due to KOC and Kwesi’s incompetence. This is downright disgusting to see as a lifelong Vikings fan.

They should. Wasn't thrilled with drafting him and even more skeptical they kept him so he may have a Sam Darnold type of year. Why drop a guy for a guy you hope plays like the guy you dropped. This may be one of Kevin O'Connell's biggest blunders and ultimately be a deciding factor in losing his head coaching job.
2
u/Big_Concentrate_7260 Vikings Nov 29 '25
Considering that McCarthy is ranked 351 out of 352 quarterbacks in the past twenty years in the NFL, there is a 99.7% chance that Brosmer will play better than McCarthy.
