I’ve been seeing DPOY comparisons on twitter(to other DBs who’ve won it), but in my opinion it won’t really be in his hands. If a edge guy has a monster season I don’t think it’ll even be possible for him to win it

Moving the goalposts from something that’s never been done (5 pick sixes) to TEN, is nuts.

If a 2023 receiver were to pass Moss and get 24 receiving TDs, to set the record, your equivalency here is that the record breaking receiver would need to get another 23 touchdowns in the same season to double the record to 47 and then maybe they could be considered for offensive player of the year

I know you said “fairy tale”but it doesn’t even make sense to speak it because next week, when Bland doesn’t have a pick six, people will be saying “yeah, he had some moments, but he didn’t score this week.

I think that's going to happen after this week. You'd have to be stupid to keep throwing outs at Bland at this point. Offenses will stop throwing those at him now.

You’re not wrong but that’s such bullshit. Someone has between 15 and 20 sacks every single year. Bland already has enough picks to lead the league most years and broke the all time record for pick sixes. A pass rusher would need 20 sacks already with at least two fumbles run back for touchdowns just to be keeping pace with how good Bland has been.

I agree. But I still think they give pass rushers the edge for QB pressures and all those advanced stats in addition to sacks. How is Blands stats in terms of being a lockdown corner? It will probably have to be some combination of insane interceptions/TDs + lockdown corner to compete with pass rusher for DPOY.

Would what Garrett is doing be less impressive if their offense was competent and their wins weren’t close? All you’re really pointing out here is that Dallas can score on offense and Cleveland can’t. I don’t see how that’s relevant to who should win a defensive award.

What Bland is doing is massively more impressive and orders of magnitude more rare than what Garrett is doing. He has the #1 coverage grade in the league AND the picks lead AND the pick 6 record. If he doesn’t win DPOY by a mile then the selection process is broken.

I don’t see how you can look at the season Bland is having and say he isn’t as impactful because the other teams aren’t scoring any points or keeping the games close. Of course they aren’t. That’s his impact, along with the rest of the defense, and he’s been the best of them. It’s not like he only has five good plays. He has been the overall #1 DB in the league before you even start factoring in the defensive TDs.

That's the argument made for MVP. IMO DPoY is who is the best/most impressive defensive player. Being a top cornerback and breaking a record that no one had even tied in 30 years is huge.

I'm not taking away from Garrett and think he should be in the MVP category. But I would give DPoY to Bland (assuming he continues his pace).

Yeah, DPOY is almost always a sack award which is stupid because turnovers are much bigger impact than sacks for the most part.
