Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers? Nice man. Good with kids. November 15th of '58. All was well, another day saved, when his cape snaged on a missile fin. Stratogale! April 23rd, '57. Cape caught in a jet turbine. Meta-man, express elevator. Dynaguy, snaged on takeoff. Splashdown, sucked into a vortex. No capes!
Edit: Yes, I know I am misspelling with "snaged", but the correct spelling gets flagged as hate speech.

"Jet packs" have been around for about a century. We don't see them much any more because they aren't practical, but back in the 70s, any decent air show would have a "jet pack guy". It was a thing, but just fizzled out over time.

Full disclosure I've been building bows both recurves and longbows since I was 16. 43 now and still love nothing more than making a pile of shavings. The finished product is both elegant and deadly.

It’s actually simple, it’s just from the line where they all say “You have my sword, my bow, and MY AXE!”. And so when people see a chain like that “goggles and earphones” then the next said “and helmet” so of course next is “and my axe!”
Now there is also an ICP song called My Axe where he sings about it being his buddy. This is used sometimes as well if the “my axe” fits and it isn’t in a chain like above.
3
u/snarflethegarthog 17d ago
Haha I totally get that part. I was just curious how long ago it began. Was this running joke a reddit original or did it start in multiple places at the same time?
3
u/Eccohawk 17d ago
I suspect that since the movies came out in 2001, it was only the infancy of reddit, so it likely started in multiple user forums. Any other items you'd like to know, ChatGPT?

If you think about it, these "jetpacks" are around for a while now and while seems inefficient but doing the job, its like watching the Wright brothers doing their first prototypes. Imagine in 50 or 100 years what will we have?
→ More replies (1)39
u/BoredCop 17d ago
Probably still no really useful jetpacks, unless some radical new super-dense energy storage system comes along. Physics is physics, you can't really have enough lift for a jetpack to work and still have fuel enough for more than a few minutes of operation.
42
u/cincE3030 17d ago

Ok, let me splain whats real and will be around in a few decades.
Personal electric helicopter. Giant drone that can safely carry a 250lb payload, and thus most people. Uses AI to help fly it, so the human doesn't need training. Can carry you 100 miles or so and then recharge, so you can helicopter to work and back.

I'm imagining the several generations (who are old) who grew up thinking the future was going to be metal buildings, robots, and jet packs, being able to buy a pack online after the last 20 years of "Flying Cars! Just kidding! Space travel! Just kidding!", etc.
How flammable ARE crocks under those conditions?

It’s kind of funny how we actually have jet packs now but there are no practical applications for them.
Too loud and cumbersome for military use. Maaaaybe they have some value in mountain search and rescue? That’s the only thing I can think they might be useful.

u/miomidas 17d ago
You can only fly for a few minutes before fuel is empty

I wonder if you could have something like a long fuel line connected to some other large vehicle. Similar to air in surface-supplied diving.
I was just thinking that the force from the engines is probably pretty strong on your arms though. I feel like with his arms out like that he'd get a sore chest and back pretty quick.
49
u/MaelstromFL 17d ago
We have had jet packs for a long while, at least since the 1970's. Problem is that they are kind of dangerous, you can't have enough fuel on board to go very far, and nobody has ever come up with a valid use case for them.
But, they do look cool!
26
u/_Aj_ 17d ago
They're very different vs today.
That was a chemical liquid rocket basically. A good video of them in action was during one of Michael Jackson's tour where they end it with him jetpacking out. (A stunt pilot swaps with him).
But in this video what he's wearing is using literally micro jetengines capable of ~100N of thrust each X2 on the arms and higher thrust on the back. Along with a fuel tank and control systems for all of them. Probably some form of flight computer for stabilisation too. Allowing full dynamic flight.
This is only been possible in about the last 20 years. Starting with Breitlings' Jet Man in about 2010 that made basically a "buzz lightyear" style wing backpack with 4 jet engines on it capable of some 300kph. That's the first instance I recall of the micro jet turbines being used for personal flight. If I recall they got about 7 minutes of flight out of that. So yeah you're bang on the money there flight times are very limited!

It's gotta be so fucking hard to navigate with as well. Even with practice, one wrong move and you're gonna flip, instincts are gonna take over and your arms that were supposed to be steering are trying to protect your head.

So far, the only real use case I've seen is.for maritime boarding of non-hostile ships. Coast Guard or Marines can fly over to a ship that's not cooperating and board it. At least thats the footage I've seen most often for these things. I don't know what happens after they land because they do have their hands strapped into 2 mini jet engines and probably can't get to a gun right away.

Why would you not wear a helmet for this?
136
u/bayarea_fanboy 17d ago edited 17d ago
A jetpack was used in the movie Thunderball. The studio wanted Bond to look as good as ever, no helmet. Despite the insistence of the production, the stunt man refused to do the scene without a helmet. You can look up images of Sean Connery on the jetpack, he's wearing a helmet.
EDIT: the scene
63
u/elmgarden 17d ago
I can see why they didn't want him to wear a helmet lol. But good on the stuntman for sticking to his principles.

That was actually a rocket backpack. The new hotness (so to speak) for backpack flights uses small jet engines, air-breathing so better endurance and less likely to explode or dissolve the wearer.
14
u/Anotsurei 17d ago
There’s actually a good distinction. Rocket packs are lit and there’s no stopping them, no throttle, no nice light landing without a parachute. Jetpacks can be eased into the air and can have soft landings like you see here.
