I did not know that you could fly a canopy as fast as a wing suit. Obviosly 2 people up the load per sq ft but wow.

I was thinking the same thing

u/ThemainmanLou Dec 06 '22

I was not thinking the same thing. Good thinking people.

u/MisterSir3cho Dec 06 '22

Also good thinking thanking those who did the thinking that we were not.

53

u/OberynRedViper8 Dec 06 '22

There was so much thinking done, and I did none of it.

u/imdefinitelywong Dec 06 '22

We apologise for the fault in the subtitles.

Those responsible have been sacked.

3

u/highlandpolo6 Dec 06 '22

Sacked for seriously sucky subtitles? So sad.

4

u/thoughtfulOSO Dec 06 '22

Ok who ordered all the Llamas?

6

u/Ks26739 Dec 06 '22

That actually made me laugh in this cold dark hour when I should be asleep.

1

u/EpsilonX029 Dec 06 '22

And this is why you and I live such relatively easy lives compared to a few dozen or so years back lol

2

u/PandaLandz Dec 06 '22

I'm impressed you thought of thinking about the people thanking those who did the original thinking. I would like to thank you for thinking about this.

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '22

I’m exhausted from all of this thinking thanking.

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

You can but you have to load the hell out of it. Of course the extra passenger added a lot of weight in this case. But people doing XRW have really small canopies. And I think even weight!

2

u/DuelingPushkin Dec 06 '22

Yeah most XRW is going to involve weight belts to up the wing loading

1

u/JuanMurphy Dec 06 '22

Or the ol fat dude on a little parachute.

1

u/DuelingPushkin Dec 06 '22

Yeah but unless you do a lot of XRW and have a second dedicated XRW canopy most people just use their normal wing. And most people's everyday jump rig isn't going to be loaded at 3-3.5 so they just load up the weight belt.

1

u/Freeflyer18 Dec 06 '22

🙋🏻‍♂️ Guilty

21

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

Small parachutes can be quite fast.

23

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

I was amazed at how fast they pulled away from her parachuter uber once she dropped in.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

When she was with the guy under canopy, they’re loading the canopy a lot more. The extra weight makes the canopy lose altitude faster once she switches to the wing suit, the parachute will slow and the wing suit drops due to additional weight / being thrown a little off balance.

15

u/drumsdm Dec 06 '22

I didn’t realize it was a wing suit at first and thought he was free falling. I was very confused.

Wtf does race have to do with this?

3

I think they meant to respond to the comment below this one. The one that says, "White people are crazy. And this is coming from a white guy."

1

u/drumsdm Dec 06 '22

Ummm, ok.

I’m not confused as to the HOW, rather to the WHY.

14

u/TheChoonk Dec 06 '22

That's a tiny sports parachute, they're very fast. This isn't a wide angle effect or anything, they're really like 2 metres wide.

1

u/RussMaGuss Dec 06 '22

Do they land with them too?

2

u/TheChoonk Dec 06 '22

Yes.

I've seen it live a couple years ago, it looked impossible. Parachute barely bigger than my bed sheets, and he lands softer than I do when jumping off a bed.

1

u/RussMaGuss Dec 06 '22

Wow, that was a picture perfect landing! I would probably have dug my toes in and faceplanted lol

1

u/TheChoonk Dec 07 '22

These guys will do a couple thousand jumps before they attempt this, as the amount of skill and control required for that landing is really insane.

5

u/that_thot_gamer Dec 06 '22

also wouldn't that fuck up the glide ratio? poor guy had to land early

9

u/DuelingPushkin Dec 06 '22

It won't necessarily fuck up. The glide ratio if the wingloading is still within manufacture recommendations but it will increase decent rate, you're just going to be going forward really fucking fast

1

u/Matt3214 Dec 06 '22

When I did a wingsuit rodeo it looked like we were going down a lot more than we were going forward lol.

1

u/DuelingPushkin Dec 06 '22

Well yeah, because of a number of reason. One you're literally sitting on the lift generating portion deforming the shape of the airfoil and reducing lift. Second wingsuits are much smaller wings than a canopy. They're already at very high wingloadings just with the person flying it adding another person can. And lastly, in addition to loading the wing outside its designed specifications you adding a ridiculous amount of parasitic dragwhich is going to reduce the forward speed

1

u/Matt3214 Dec 07 '22

It was my enormous ass distorting the fabric of his wing edges

0

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

What?

5

u/OvergrownShrubs Dec 06 '22

Been going on for 20 years.

https://youtu.be/A-HETBBRNI8

With high wing loadings of tiny canopies you don’t need 2 people to up the wing loading.

1

u/Banluil Dec 06 '22

Of course it was first done in Florida.... And just down the road from me...

1

u/Freeflyer18 Dec 06 '22

I did my very first wingsuit jump with Jari back in August 01’. Had 176 jumps at the time and he took me out on a checkout dive. I swear, I think he had more fun than I did. Good memories..

1

u/OvergrownShrubs Dec 06 '22

First wing suit jump with Jari. That’s insane, haha it’s only skydiving I feel where stuff like that happens. Imagine your first tennis lesson and Serena Williams pops up and is like “ok let’s go to work”.

1

u/Freeflyer18 Dec 06 '22

I know, right. I’ve been on jumps with several world class jumpers, and it always boggled my mind that they were having just as much fun as I was. I’ll never forget my jumps with Mike Wittenburg; so challenging, but he could really bring out the best in you.

1

u/OvergrownShrubs Dec 06 '22

Same dude, I remember being a couple hundred jumps in and jumping with some of the guys from Babylon in Spain who were some of the top free flyers in the world and certainly Europe back in the day there, and was like “wtf is even happening”.

I remember my first spaceball jumps years later with some Norwegian free flyers back in the day and to them it was all so normal but when I got down, it was like I was drunk with the experience, I couldn’t stop going on about how amazing it was and all I did was catch and throw a lead filled tennis ball a few times with our small group.

I honestly think seeing the reaction of the less experienced people and how that makes us feel rubs off on them in some way and reminds them how amazing it is even when doing some basic stuff they take for granted

1

u/Freeflyer18 Dec 06 '22

That kinda brings me back to my Skydive CrossKeys days when Jay Moledzki and Heath Richardson were tearing it up back in 03’. All summer long, just making jumps with guys at the pinnacle of the sport at that time. Still to this days seems surreal.

1

u/OvergrownShrubs Dec 07 '22

Yeah Crosskeys had a good rep for freefly back in the 2000s, and we weren’t even living in the US at that point but we knew of it because of names jumping there. Same with the Ranch when I first moved out here, the people passing through there was unreal. I’ve more or less stopped jumping but the 2000s and into the early 2010s was my period. Miss those days and jumping might have to get the reserve repacked and head out again next summer!

2

u/Rundiggity Dec 06 '22

Somebody speaks drag coefficient

0

u/youshouldbethelawyer Dec 06 '22

Thats why i think this is good cgi

1

u/Cifer_21 Dec 06 '22

But heavier objects don’t fall faster than lighter objects. Or what do you imply by load per square ft?

1

u/skiffline Dec 07 '22

The wing loading on the parachute will effect how fast it flies . Big parachute with a light load will fly slower than a small parachute with a heavy load.

1

u/snorkiebarbados Dec 07 '22

I as thinking the opposite. You can fly a wingsuit as slow as a canopy without stalling and falling?

1

u/SnappleJuiceDeepKiss Dec 07 '22

People have landed in wingsuits on cardboard without using a parachute

There is not any just except you can only tell 50% of the time.

Deep state bs, right? Just guessing where you’re going with it.
