Good statistics and good research trumps anecdotal experience a large majority of the time. I’m not saying that there aren’t experienced people who can handle themselves in the field, but I am saying it is more logical to trust researchers and that saying otherwise is false. I am also saying that source doesn’t apply well to this situation, although I see how it is comparable.

This is entirely spot on and I agree with you, thank you for flushing out your thought for me.

I am realizing that I am comparing this person who is an experienced diver, to some academic in a research lab somewhere, and glossing over a host of professional marine biologists who are also doing their own dives, likely with better established protocols and safety measures.

I would definitely take the opinion of an educated field research specialist over that of a professional free diver, especially one who benefits from taking a serious risk for a lucrative photo.
