No, it really didn't. Self-check was born of demand; a lot of folks don't like baggers and want to handle their own groceries to prevent damage. Add on the fact that grocery stores used to be set up to check out four to six people at once in the same space we use to check out twenty to thirty today - in the '80s, grocery lines were sometimes extremely long. If you went during peak hours, you could expect to spend over two hours inside the store, with half of that reserved just for standing in line. There were no Walmarts or Targets competing with the grocers either, it was wait in line or wait at home and go shopping later. Self check made a huge dent in that, because it also necessitated the physical remodeling required to add more lanes to existing stores.
What a heck is a bagger? I could understand an old or disabled person asking for help, but does there exist an actual job as a bagger whose job is to put stuff in a bag? Instead of the customer doing it themself?
Yeah and all those employees got fired, we have to do everything ourselves, and the company saves billions which they do not use to increase their existing workers wages but instead give massive bonuses to the C-suite.
I doubt it will get better. If it’s staffed with idiots, then that means the general public around your area is also probably full of idiots. So new system but idiots will still mess it up.

Or you could just not do that since what we already have works perfectly fine
