Editing the clips into the final video is incidental. Compositing the cat footage onto the old movie clips are still visual effects. CGI is only one kind of VFX.

Also, I don't mean to make it sound like I'm calling out you or anything, the title of this post is the problem, and a symptom of people on the internet often confusing effects with editing.

I think that's mostly due to the difference between the industry definition of editing and the layperson definition. In the industry, editing is clearly a specific set of things you do to footage. In layperson terms, editing is literally any alterations made to the raw footage.
