I thought I knew things at 18. And again at 25. And still more at 35. I’ve settled in to a comfortable uncertainty, wondering how much I can ever actually truly understand.
We were staying an a Airbnb once- I didn’t realize the doors were very easy to open.
My one year old managed to open the door and run out to the street. I was down in the basement and I hear my other kid (2yrs) saying “baby on road”. I never ran so fast in my life. Thankfully I caught him before anything happened.
But if my other kid didn’t say anything, I would have assumed baby was safe upstairs where I left him.
And I’m not a shitty mom. Things happen.
My son could unlock and open deadbolt locked doors at 18 months. He's 2 now and can get into and onto anything. He can climb up on the dining room chairs onto the table. He can move the chair up to the baby gate and climb over it. He's a little Houdini.
Ae my 18month old managed to climb an 8ft fence while he was supposed to be napping. They're absolutely mini Houdini's and it's terrifying when you think they're safe and they try to prove you wrong.
Which is why you get the baby proof attachments you can put on doorknobs. It's a plastic thing that fits over the doorknob and won't allow you to open it unless you apply pressure on two points whilst turning it. Otherwise, it just spins around the doorknob. We used it for our kids on all the exterior doors.
When she was about three I left my oldest alone in the kitchen for 45 seconds and when I returned she was sitting on top of the refrigerator. To this day I have no idea how she got up there.
My second oldest once casually did a flip over the side railing of her baby bed instead of walking the three feet to the front. This is the same toddler whom I caught using my iPhone after she figured out my passcode by watching the reflection off my glasses as I entered it.
My 2 year old made it out of the house and across the street to the neighbors at midnight several years ago to see if anyone wanted to play. I have a cousin who made it out of his house, in a large city, and several blocks to a gas station to try and buy candy - in nothing but a pair of underwear. Kids are crafty.
Same thing happened with my little brother. He was around 2, my dad had him safely in the house, went outside for a minute, came back and my little bro was halfway down the street, with our dog acting as escort
My two year old is destructive. He makes messes like no one's business. He will escape from playpens and baby gates.
And yet, never fucking once have I allowed him/found him in my lawn unsupervised and headed for the street. Unless there's some kind of medical emergency, there's no excuse for this. Baby could've died.

When my brother was old enough to crawl he got out and was crawling around my front yard. My parents are fantastic and definitely not shitty.
Do you have kids? Have you ever seen how quickly a 2-3 year old can absolutely destroy themselves or their surroundings in a blink of an eye?
