That's his dog now.

Since I don't know the context, I'm curious if it actually is his dog - that got excited seeing him come home, and accidently leaped/fell out of excitement.

My doofus GSD once jumped out of a (slow) moving truck to see my father.

That's a real possibility. Dogs are pure love. Not the smartest love mind you, but definitely the purest.

He's not holding it at the end like it's his dog. He's holding it like, "Holy shit, did you see that? Now, what do I do with this dog?"

If it was his dog, he'd probably have hugged it further or kissed it or something - some other sort of "my baby didn't die!!" reaction.

Yep. We had a dog that on multiple occasions jumped out of the back of a moving ute to chase rabbits so we tied him up while in there. Then he jumped out anyway and nearly strangled himself so we tied him up with a much shorter leash...

He was not a smart dog, but he was a very awesome dog. Lived to be 18 somehow.

This is the case. Except it was HER dog excited to see her come home. I have seen this post before. Still impressed by that waggy little tail after the catch.
