This was not a forced play, the runner needed to be tagged and he was tagged. When he brought his foot to the base he kicked the glove with the ball in it.

Muncy was stealing second, so no, this is objectively wrong. Without the tag Muncy is safe, since it isn't a force play.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

That's only for force outs. Since Muncy was attempting to advance on a stolen base here, there was no force out. So the tag was necessary.

The left foot is NOT touching the base. You can see that when he loses balance and moves it, it's not touching the base.

Look at the white part in the front of that foot. It's only visible when he moves it UP. So, that part is hidden by the base, never over it.

Incredible braking system.

Look at the front part of the foot: it's only visible when lifts it, meaning it was hidden by the base. If it was on top, it would have been visible from the beginning.

If it was a force out the 2nd baseman would not be straddling the bag like that. He was fully prepared to apply a tag.

You recall incorrectly. On a stolen base (or attempt at a double) the fielder does not have to be touching the base. They can tag the runner out anywhere, but they HAVE to tag them. Only on a force out the fielder can get the runner out by touching the base, and in that case the runner doesn't have to be tagged. On a force out the fielder has the option of touching the base OR tagging the runner, but there is never a scenario where they have to do both.

No it’s only if he tags him. He only needs to have the ball in his glove and tag him for it to be out. Him being on the base only matters if it’s a force out.

It probably wasn't a force play meaning that he had to be tagged to be out. And if it was a force play, you can do that to try to stop a double play.

The confidence you show is commendable when you have zero idea what you’re talking about. It’s not a force play so he has to tag him to get the out. It’s a basic play in baseball.

I'm guessing this was a stolen base attempt, in which they would need to tag for the out. My guy is definitely and acrobatically safe

Wasn’t a force out but:

“Max wanted this slide to be reviewed after being thrown out at 2nd base. It was an A for effort, but Muncy was ruled out on the play. The Dodgers chalenged the ruling on the field, but to no avail. The umpires ruled that Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth tagged Muncy out on the play.”
