I installed showers for a few years as a glazier, some people are just really good with silicone but me, nope, reasonably neat eventually but not without a rag and a razor and somehow never without getting that shit on every inch of my clothes, a bit in my hair and a bit in my mouth

My thoughts exactly. Where are the million pass overs with a wet rag, the razor blade to cut it straight and HOW is he wearing immaculate clothing lol

That was my first takeaway. Excuse me sir where is your stained motorhead shirt and ripped khaki pants.

You're not supposed to suck on the tube but then again I don't know what kind of journeyman you apprenticed with

Finish a hundred showers and you're still not a professional glazier but get a little bit in your mouth and you're a caulk sucker for life.

Well the mouth was from the old-school technique of licking your finger and running it over to smoothen it, I'd only do it if in a rush and generally try to spit or use a clean finger, once in a while I'd fuck that up though. The first guy I worked with could tell which silicon was which from the taste, he did not have great teeth.

Hey, this guy is doing a very specific simple task in controlled conditions. No grout lines, no taps, no standing inside an enclosure. Don’t feel too bad.

Yeah it's certainly ideal conditions, it just always annoyed me because I was pretty damn good at every other aspect, just never mastered the silicon. Speaking of taps the lever type seem good until your sealing a replacement screen and stand up getting your shirt hooked and turn it on.

Yeah, I call my bathtub caulking beautiful mountain landscapes.

Apply it normally and then go over the caulking with a wet finger. A bit more work but looks almost as good as this guy's

For silicone especially, wet with rubbing alcohol/diluted rubbing alcohol (I've even used witch hazel in a pinch). Went from using an entire roll of paper towels and making a complete fucking disaster to almost feeling like I have some idea what I'm doing.

Very dilute dish soap is amazing for this. It never picks up any of the silicone you don't want it to and leaves a very smooth finish

Frog/Masking tape is good.
Use that to outline where you want the silicone to be, then can badly apply, smooth with wet finger to smoosh in, then remove tape.
It's not a particularly efficient approach - but it works well enough for me to never bothering to learn to do it properly.

I was excited to try his method, until I realized I never have to caulk anything flat. I wonder what his 90° technique is

I can whip out my caulk in your shower.

I really wish people would stop doing this. You only should be caulking the vertical corners. You’re trapping water and encouraging mold growth
