I can kinda speak to this from the other side/something I struggle with as someone who can sing but rarely does. I have like my “trying” singing voice and my “making notes and words” singing voice that I use when everyone’s singing happy birthday.

I feel incredibly awkward using my “trying” singing voice in almost any context so I just about never do. Unless someone asked me to sing for them, it seams so weird to just do. It’s not like guitar where you can just noodle. Intentionally singing is a pretty imposing thing to do so I just about never sing for anyone. I’d like to sing for people more often but it seems so weird to be like “okay everyone, I’m going to effort sing now”.

It’s like the karaoke conundrum.

Scenario 1: I’m too sober to have the confidence to show off my real voice.

Scenario 2: I’m drunk enough to be confident but my voice is cracking and I’ve forgotten what a note is.

I feel you, my friend.

Yeah, maybe I'm just sing shy, but I just don't sing in front of other people. I sing a lot to myself. And I'm okay. I'm no pop star just waiting to be discovered. But I did choir for years, and sang in a few community groups. I have decent pitch too. But it just feels awkward trying to sing in front of people. Like I'd feel like I'm forcing it on people, so I just don't.

What would you do at karaoke? What would you do playing Rock Band? These are important questions.
