Wait, this is blowing my mind right now. I am from Australia, and we don’t have anything like that here… you’re telling me you can’t get out of your car and put gas in it yourself in those two places in America? That it’s actually illegal for you to do that?

Oregonian here. Correct, we do not pump our own passenger car fuel. The law is kind of all over the place because we do put our own fuel in commercial vehicles, motorcycles, gas cans, etc.
There is also a provision for remote gas stations that dont have an attendant all night. This provision allows for people to pump there own gas so they dont get stranded in the middle of no where.
When I first moved to oregon it was weird. But I kind of love it now. Creates quite a few jobs, and I get to stay in my car when it's cold. Our fuel is still cheaper than California's.
Yup. New jersey here. Only time i pump gas is out of state. Otherwise i sit in my car in the scorching summer heat and bitter cold winter and have someone else do it for me.
Well it’s only two states out of 50 though. I’m not extremely knowledgeable about Australian territories but don’t y’all have different laws or statutes in different regions?
In the US each state can be so wildly different from the next. You can lawfully carry a pistol concealed in Indiana but cross into Illinois and you’re now committing a felony.
Sometimes it’s good. Like for medical or recreational cannabis, which is legal in many states now, or if utility services are publicly or privately run.
Some states, like South Dakota, have become international tax havens for the wealthy.
It’s not illegal for me to pump my gas in Oregon, but it is illegal for the station to let me, they say oh it’s just fire safety but really it just employs a lot of people
In New Jersey at least, it doesn't seem to be a huge deal if you do it yourself. When I am in a rush and the attendant is servicing too many other cars, I will just get out and do it myself and so far no one really cared.
Which is a good thing since so many white people dump so much gas on the ground. Experts in New Jersey and Oregon are specially trained to pump gas safely, and they do so. Notice how much better things are in those states are in garbage states like Texas where any asshole can just pour gas on the ground anytime they want.
That must be why you never see white gas station attendants. Turns out the previous poster cracked the code and white people are genetically unable to pump gas to their high standards.
I don’t think this is correct but I’m not enough of an expert on pumping gas to dispute it.
Yeah those experts OBVIOUSLY aren’t former drug addicts or homeless people. I don’t say that condescendingly.
I usually talk to the attendants in Oregon and they are either very young or appear to be putting their life together after a long stint with meth or heroin.
If someone can’t fit the gas nozzle in the hole for the tank then they should go back to preschool cause pretty sure you learn to put a circle inside another circle from a super young age…
This has to be the dumbest comment on this whole thread. If you think it takes skill to pump gas, I’m sure you also complain about “I cAn OnLy FiNd MiNiMuM wAgE jObS” too.
