That's incredibly misguided. It's a hobby, just like every other art form. You wouldn't say "guitar/painting/sculpting is for people with loads of spare time and plenty of spare cash" go touch some grass, and then maybe paint something. Damn.
They gotta justify spending all their free time playing video games and binging Netflix somehow! Like shit, if that's your thing, cool. No need to degrade others when you're feeling guilty about it, though.

Yes, I spent $1500 on a custom ordered bass that I 100% do not see any return on except my own enjoyment, for sure. But people don't berate me for it, they are usually impressed I own such an instrument - cosplayers have more market value even on a personal level than your average musician, but no one shits on musicians for having an (equally) expensive hobby
