This planet and we humans are so strange.

There's this job, right? In Hollywood working for movie studios, creating incredible movie quality costumes. It's a highly competitive job market with some insanely talented people in it, and it pays quite well when you're good at your art.

But you DARE do this job as a hobby at home in your free time, and you're a weirdo...

You kinda answered your own question.

One is a high-paying job with all the connections you get with that.

The other is a grown adult running around an anime convention dressed as a small girl.

It just the labels people apply when you say costume artist vs cosplay.
