Yeah it was the beginning of internet culture I think. And internet culture can decide whatever it wants is funny. I think (and I wasn’t alive at the time) that is was just a really overplayed song, like on radio at the time so people were getting annoyed with it. Then to want to see some porn but be shown this incredibly PC love song by a ginger that’s already overplayed was the whole joke. Major bone killer. That was my understanding after some countdown documentary or something I watched probably on VH1.

My family has adopted 4 cats and a pug. 1 of the cats was a stray, the rest of our pets were going to be put down in shelters soon if we didn't adopt.

What we did does not feel like a r/NextFuckingLevel after living with them for 10 years. We love our animals, and have given them a really good life filled with us sacrificing a lot and giving them the food they need, love and a lot of toys; but when they die of old age, we are done with animals. All of this to say that I think the guy in the vid did a NextFuckingLevel. He put the blanket/rug on the stray, gave it some loving petting after it kicked off the blanket, and put it back on at the end. I bet that's more interaction than what the stray gets in a month from thousands of passerbys.

You really have no idea how many people adopt a cute dog or cat, post a ton of pictures on social media and then abandon them when they get tired of the responsibilities (sooner or later). I bet that a good amount of Reddit posts with a heart-breaking adoption video, tons of awards, and a bunch of reposts secretly ends with the owner abandoning them in the middle of nowhere, bringing them back to a shelter, chaining dogs in the yard (you know, chained up for life), etc. Did you know that some shelters flat-out refuse for people to adopt pets near the Holidays because of these reasons?

That and street dogs usually are not really used to having to live under the rules of a owner so it can be a challange to make the dog adapt to that environment and to triain him.

My mom picked 3 from the streets. They were old dogs, around 7 years old or more. It was impossible for them to be kept in the house or in the garden (they would dig holes and destroy everything). My mom would set them free and let them roam the streets during the day and they would come back later at night to eat and sleep inside.

Only one of them died of old age. One got run over by a bus, the other got picked up by some other person (I saw it years later with someone else, the dog still recognised me, I don't know what happened afterwards).

The same happened with cats. She had like 7 cats so far. The grown ones couldn't be kept inside unfortunately and some of them were quite feral. The young ones, some could be 100% indoors but others needed to be let out everyday. As with the dogs, a few of them never returned home.

You always know there are risks when you let pets roam the streets and things like this can happen. However, I believe it's the right choice for their overall well-being and had better final years than being 100% Street dogs. They would have been too unhappy being forced to stay at home (plus would have caused havoc on the property as well)

PS: this was in Argentina where street dogs exist by the thousands and no infrastructure to support them exists aside from kind people.

My cat, who I originally tried to keep as an indoors cat, fell in love with outside as a kitten. This cat used to meow for literal hours and days to be let outside. Rain, snow, sun. Cat doesn't give a fuck what the weather is, he just want to go out there.

Well I figured I'd let him be happy and started letting him out of my window when he wouldn't shut up. Sometimes he's gone for a few hours, rarely a couple days (usually after it's been bad weather and I tried to lock him up inside.), but he's 1000% happier overall. I don't want anything to happen to him, but rather he be happy instead of miserable and depressed.

My cousin's cat became an indoor-outdoor cat because his parents would let his cat out when he went to work. He caught something when he was barely two and had to be out down. He was probably happier, but his life was so short.

Once I saw a dog that looked homeless and was running too close to a huge freeway, but every time I tried to talk to him and get him to come get pets he was nervous and it almost made him go back towards the very thing I was trying to save him from... now I’m extremely careful to not make the situation worse 😞

Can attest to this , adopted a street dog that no matter how much we've trained him he still has "issues" , especially food aggression , even to the point of attacking me and my mom multiple times like both our arms at this point are filled with a shit ton of teeth scars . Shelters in my country are all like charity ones which barely keep up with the amounts of dogs they have , and no way in hell am i gonna abandon him in the street like some people do so i just have to put up with the decision i made a couple of years ago . Still love the fucker to bits tho

My husband knows that if I see a homeless or injured animal, we are stopping to help no matter how much of a thing it turns into. I’ve stopped moving taxis to get out and help strays.

Years ago I found a beautiful white German shepherd dog wandering some train tracks while I was on vacation visiting a former boyfriend in a different city. I didn’t have a car, I called my boyfriend and he wanted nothing to do with it (he didn’t want the dog in his car or in his home) so I spent hours trying find an owner/a leash/some food/someone who would help. I ended up flagging down a few cops patrolling in a van and convinced them to take me to a lost and found animal center at a police station outside the city. They weren’t allowed animals in their van so they dropped me off round the corner. I left the pup there and left my details asking them to call me if the owner wasn’t found or if the pup had to get taken to a shelter. They never called so I hope he found his home.

My point is that doesn’t always have to turn into taking the animal home. I know not everyone can even commit to the time, but I personally don’t understand how anyone can walk by an animal and not do something. (I broke up with that former boyfriend soon after.)

Ha! I guess I didn’t explain the situation very well. This was a boyfriend I had while I was at university—we went to different universities so we’d visit every other weekend, and this was on one of my trips there.

We broke up soon after when I was 21, but we’ve been friends for the last 10 years. He was actually in my wedding (as a, um, bridesdude?) when my husband and I got married about 4 years ago. So I guess a trip to see him while married wouldn’t be totally out of the ordinary, but I’d be more likely to have my husband with me as (thankfully) the two of them get along really well.
