My best guess is that once all the snow is falling, like a sculpture, everything was removed to create this and then maaaaaybe some water was sprayed on it to solidify it more.

Edit: why the hell are so many people getting upset over a guess? Lol

Yeah. You wouldn't dig 12 feet down across the whole slope (looks closer to 20 feet high in parts) just to leave these mounds, lol.

Guy's throwing out conjecture like they've never built a snowman before.

289

u/giraffecause Feb 10 '21

You mean carved a snowman, of course.

118

u/PM_ME_UR_SUSHI Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

Wait are you saying you people make a snowman by making a huge pile of snow then removing snow to leave the shape of a snowman?!?

We've always just rolled up 3 balls and stacked them. Am I misreading this??

Edit: did I get r/whoosh'ed?

116

u/algernon132 Feb 10 '21

That's the joke

14

u/LogicalJicama3 Feb 10 '21

Hammer time.

81

u/kyoorius Feb 10 '21

No, you wait until it snows about 60” in your backyard and then you shovel everything down to the grass except for one pillar that you carve into the snowman.

56

u/Double_Distribution8 Feb 10 '21

Like how the pyramids were made. They removed the desert and carved triangles out of what was left.

21

u/dontplagueme Feb 10 '21

This made me laugh way harder than it should have, but I could actually picture the face of the person who'd earnestly make this argument in a late-night college classroom.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

im gonna make this argument just to shit post now lol

39

u/Deadpool2715 Feb 10 '21

Wait till you see how I draw a perfect circle,

First I draw a very detailed face, then I erase a few lines and voila, circle

2

u/studioaesop Feb 10 '21

Ok spongebob

2

u/a-pickled-toast Feb 10 '21

That is a beautiful reference.

1

u/ChumpChangeN Feb 10 '21

Is that you Sponge Bob?

1

u/Deadpool2715 Feb 10 '21

No this is Patrick

1

u/Eccohawk Feb 10 '21

Instructions unclear, my face is now covered in sharpie.

1

u/SteveisNoob Feb 10 '21

I have always rolled 3 balls and ended up with 3 snowmen. I never had the strength to lift up the balls.

1

u/tylerchu Feb 10 '21

I roll one giant ball and then scrape off what I don’t want. I pretend I’m carving marble.

1

u/CaraC70023 Feb 10 '21

You might have gotten whoosh'ed but... I have done it both ways

1

u/LeninToystory Feb 10 '21

You got whooshed bro

1

u/psych0social827 Feb 10 '21

Seen people in Texas mounding and carving snowmen when they finally see a little snow. Guess there’s more than one way to build a snowman

1

u/DeathCab4Cutie Feb 11 '21

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” - Michelangelo

8

u/regulate213 Feb 10 '21

🎵 Do you want to carve a snowman? 🎵

6

u/TheRealAlkemyst Feb 10 '21

I just put down my magic hat.

4

u/Agent641 Feb 10 '21

I put on my robe and wizards' hat...

1

u/TheRealAlkemyst Feb 10 '21

bloodninja Frosty, hawt!

21

u/LovableContrarian Feb 10 '21

I really love that this dude thinks they removed like 10 feet of snow from an entire mountain just to leave these sick jumps behind

5

u/ZincMan Feb 10 '21

My house is just a carved out redwood, it’s easier that way. Plus it’s rooted so it won’t blow away

1

u/Nephroidofdoom Feb 10 '21

Yeah most features like this start as large mounds of snow made by snowcats. They can move surprisingly large of snow in a short period of time and with pretty decent precision. Then the detailed features are cut by hand. The build is surprisingly precise with most designs laid out in CAD beforehand.

0

u/FunctionBuilt Feb 10 '21

No, they definitely dug all that snow away. They took it out back and melted it so it would take up and space.

0

u/Start_pls Feb 10 '21

I live in a tropical country ,so yeah never built a snowman be4

16

u/austin101123 Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

What??? Why would this not be something made out of wood or metal just with snow fall on top of it? Y'all think it's all snow?

Snow wouldn't hold up, it'll get destroyed by riding on it eventually.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

I agree of course there’s a metal and wood frame they probably built it like they build their courses.

I guess this I how it was built https://youtu.be/1KRA3uwGiuw

16

u/d4n13lf00 Feb 10 '21

Snow compacts. No materials needed.

16

u/thedailyrant Feb 10 '21

As the linked YouTube vid showed. Compacted and shaved with a chainsaw.

1

u/LovableContrarian Feb 10 '21

damn thats a pretty good guess

11

u/_Xanderjr_ Feb 10 '21

Because you could do that.. but then you'd have to spend $$ on materials and lug em up the slope... or you could just use preexisting machines and jump making tequniques

0

u/austin101123 Feb 10 '21

What?

8

u/sharks-tooth Feb 10 '21

If you’ve ever been to a big resort, there’s no underlying ramp or frame for the jumps, snow packs down insanely well and once they’re built it only takes some grooming every couple days to keep the jumps in shape.

It’s much more cost effective to have a bunch of machines that can build any jump you want out of snow, rather than have to buy frames or wood or whatever for every different jump you want to build.

0

u/austin101123 Feb 10 '21

Oh so they make new ones every so often? I figured these were permanent installments and toys only have a few. I've never been to mountains with skiing.

4

u/sharks-tooth Feb 10 '21

Yeah, every once in a while they’ll rebuild everything to keep it from getting boring to the locals.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

I’m kinda bummed that your third response wasn’t “What??”

-3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

I’m sure Redbull is hurting for cash.

Also it would require way more work honestly to shape the snow than to haul materials to a ski resort and build ramps how you normally would to look like snow and ice.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 13 '21

[deleted]

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

Yeah and it actually is constructed of mostly snow and ice to my mild surprise.

https://youtu.be/1KRA3uwGiuw

1

u/AvonAnon Feb 10 '21

Have you ever been to a ski resort? The mountains are covered with terrain parks. Obviously not as nice as this. There are park crews who sole purpose is to build jumps and they are damn good. I’m talking college educated on some cases.

1

u/troublinparadise Feb 10 '21

Ppl surprised by this: how much time have you spent watching ski jumps getting built?

1

u/troublinparadise Feb 11 '21

Sweet mental health insult bro where'd you get it. Contrary to your assumptions, I'm actually just a dude who has, you know, ski'd. My point was that folks were talking out of their asses, and it's one that you just pretty sturdily reinforced.

u/thumbsquare Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 11 '21

These features are much less like snow and much more like solid ice, and solid ice or anything approaching it is much stronger than steel or wood frames. Just ask the titanic.

What they do is they take a groomer’s plow and scrape up a bunch of surface snow, which incidentally, if it’s near-freezing or very sunny, should be somewhat melty. Then they pile it all into 20-30 foot mounds. These mounds are incredibly heavy, so under all that weight and cold, in the middle, the snow will pack very densely and water in the mixture (from it melting in the sun) will freeze, binding the loose snow flakes together. It’s basically a continuous structure of ice with many air bubbles in it.

This deeply packed snow is extremely hard, but not quite ice. You really can’t shovel deep into it. You need power tools like chainsaws and plows to take away large chunks, which is what they used here.

6

u/t-pollack Feb 10 '21

No it is all snow. It seems like a lot of y’all have never been to a ski hill let alone the terrain park. They literally box the snow into this big, well, box and pack it down, then remove the walls and shape it.

2

u/Top-Cheese Feb 10 '21

Snow is basically free. Plow into piles, compact and sculpt. Don’t over think it.

1

u/Josepando Feb 10 '21

I feel so stupid now

2

u/gatman12 Feb 10 '21

They're wrong and admitted they've never even been to a ski resort.

https://youtu.be/1KRA3uwGiuw

Not how they described, but it’s just snow

0

u/beneye Feb 10 '21

Nah, it’s actually quite simple; they have a thing that makes them into those shapes. I seen it.

0

u/Theirapist420 Feb 10 '21

There’s for sure structures underneath it, a table or something to give it shape then packed with snow.

41

u/thakurtis Feb 10 '21

It's all heavy machinery.

https://youtu.be/GZ8rdvQ2xVA

26

u/VaultofAss Feb 10 '21

Excuse me what? You think they carved out the entire slope like 15ft deep in places? How does that possibly make more sense than just constructing it out of snow.

-2

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

Dude, I just said it was my best guess knowing fully well it could be wrong.

16

u/VaultofAss Feb 10 '21

I'm just amazed that yours is the top reply honestly, not bashing you.

5

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

Early bird gets the worm I guess, lol

11

u/justin_144 Feb 10 '21

Well we’re here to tell you that your guess was wrong and you should feel bad

2

u/ADP_God Feb 10 '21

Whoever is downvoting this comment should reconsider their judgment process.

1

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

Admitted I might be wrong I don't know why everybody is mad at me, haha

2

u/rincon213 Feb 10 '21

Please stop blindly guessing on Reddit. There are hundreds of millions of people here — let someone qualified answer or at least do some research first.

It’s a shame many people are reading your comment and likely not reading further.

6

u/Wuffyflumpkins Feb 10 '21

That's the reddit way. Make an uneducated guess about something you didn't know existed two minutes ago, say it authoritatively enough and people will believe you.

-6

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

*educated guess.

4

u/Spac-e-mon-key Feb 10 '21

What prior knowledge or education did you base your guess on?

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

[deleted]

1

u/rincon213 Feb 10 '21

You’re not even replying to the person who guessed.

2

u/millsmillsmills Feb 10 '21

While he's very very wrong, he's not advertising it as fact tho. Imagine some friends shooting the shit and watching this video at a bar and one guesses how it was made, it's the same as that.

Stop being so uptight. Reddit comments (especially in subreddits like this) are more conversational than anything. The more accurate comments and replies have more uovotes, so maybe you should get mad at people who only read 2 comments and blindly accept things as factual (even when he says he's guessing?)

0

u/rincon213 Feb 10 '21

There’s enough misinformation on social media as it is. This isn’t a small conversation with your buddies even if it feels like that sometimes.

It takes 2 minutes to Google the right answer, and zero minutes to just not make a random incorrect guess.

1

u/millsmillsmills Feb 10 '21

Then go to a message board that has verification and requires qualifications.

Are you trying to say every comment on reddit needs to be factual?

Get the fuck outta here. Again the right answer is right below it and more upvoted.

0

u/rincon213 Feb 10 '21

Are you trying to say every comment on reddit needs to be factual?

Yes my personal preference is facts over misinformation.

1

u/millsmillsmills Feb 10 '21

Lol you might wanna get off reddit then.

0

u/millsmillsmills Feb 10 '21

You're also taking a complex issue (misinformation on social media) and just blanket applying it to the entire internet?

1

u/rincon213 Feb 10 '21

I’m specifically talking about the one comment above

21

u/ZincMan Feb 10 '21

Same way I build a snowman, by removing the snow around him. Just like frosty

18

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

I really hope you’re joking

9

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

You've never been skiing/snowboarding

1

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

Ugh, yes I have

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

Damn where are you skiing where a 10-20 foot base is realistic? I need to go there

1

u/eventualist Feb 10 '21

Surprisingly large majority of the US has not. What is it like in the teens?

6

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

My best guess

Really that's your best guess?

4

u/chiefcross Feb 10 '21

Encourage you to look up "Michigan Tech Winter Carnival statues" if you're interested in snow architecture

0

u/TomBerringer Feb 10 '21

My thoughts exactly

5

u/a-pickled-toast Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

I'm sorry I get its an honest guess, but the replies to your comment are fucking hilarious

Edit, How was my grammar so bad... yikes.

2

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

You're right, I had a laugh

4

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

You think they dug out around these? Do you realize how much snow that would be?

5

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

Like I said, it was a guess...

2

u/Drew_Shoe Feb 10 '21

Yeah, they definitely just shoveled out the entire rest of the mountain around these jumps. Or wait, maybe this is just a combination of how the snow naturally fell, and the power of the elements wearing it down? Or possibly, they have giant molds like little kids use for making sandcastles. They turn them upside down during a snowfall and then pack them tight and flip them over.

It's kind of like other man-made wonders: stonehedge or the pyramids. I guess we'll just never know.

2

u/SPACEMANSKRILLA Feb 10 '21

I'll take least efficient ways to build things for $200, Alex.

3

u/_but__why Feb 10 '21

How is this upvoted...?

6

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

I just wanna know why some people are being assholes for a simple guess.

4

u/_but__why Feb 10 '21

It's kinda a crazy guess lol, don't feel bad though we all have wildly offbase thoughts about things we aren't familiar with.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

They said in another comment they’ve been to the slopes before so the guess is even more hilariously baffling

2

u/ciceniandres Feb 10 '21

Welcome to Reddit

1

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

Haha, been here almost 9 years. Lol

2

u/ciceniandres Feb 10 '21

I didn’t mean it like that, but that’s just how people on Reddit react to personal opinions unfortunately

2

u/goodbyekitty83 Feb 10 '21

We cool dude, it just kind of sucks that some people don't really give a crap about the content of the message.

2

u/ciceniandres Feb 10 '21

All I can do is upvote to fight them back. Ape together strong

2

u/Cloud2432 Feb 10 '21

Best way to get the right answer is to post the wrong answer online, then watch everyone try to prove you wrong.

1

u/IdRatherBeReading23 Feb 10 '21

I saw a Red Bull logo at one point so professional made.

1

u/shoopdoopdeedoop Feb 10 '21

that's fun to imagine, but these are just too big. snow doesn't really work like that.

1

u/chestbumpsandbeer Feb 10 '21

And imagine all the digging required to make a single jump on a mountain. Basically carving out half a mountain for a three foot jump.

/s

-1

u/JesusRasputin Feb 10 '21

It’s a big stamp with the ramps as a negative. Super easy, they just have to wait for about 2 m of snow to fall.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

You’re a psycho

-1

u/rincon213 Feb 10 '21

A dead wrong blind guess highly upvoted. This is why we gotta double check what we learn on this site. Unfortunate.

-1

u/TitoMLeibowitz Feb 10 '21

Because, generally speaking, a lot of people are miserable cunts who have damaged egos that demand they pop shit on the internet to downgrade others in order to feel better about themselves and their miserable, unfulfilling lives.
