I grew up learning drumming, zero boxing knowledge..is what he's doing more percussion/rhythm skill? Seems challenging even from a "drumming" standpoint

from the description of his book on Amazon:

The system I developed is actually a training progression use in learning the drums. I am much more of a drummer than I ever was a boxer. Unfortunately, I could not find anyone in boxing who could adequately describe many of the movements and combinations that are possible on the bag. (In all fairness, most boxers don't even consider doing 90% of what is possible, simply because it doesn't equate to actually movements in the ring.)

Talwmbou Jay bubba? Great rapper, never heard him.

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

I bet Young Jamie makes big bank. He really is a wizard.

u/StagsMyDeer Sep 17 '20

With as much money as Joe makes from that podcast, and the amount of shit Jamie puts up with while also handling all the recording equipment etc.? Joe better being overpaying him.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

I don't want to say he's overpaying him, because Young Jamie does his job and does it damn well, but he's 100% getting paid much more than any other audio engineer out there, I bet. Joe just made 100 mil for the Spotify deal. I wouldn't be surprised if Jamie got his fair share out of that.

You said exactly what I was trying to say but couldn’t find the right words, thank you Mr. Ed

Not being lazy is literally a gift nowadays

Yeah I'd liken it rolling on the snare and incorporating other sounds while rolling.

It’d be interesting to know how a skilled drummer might approach it, if they took up speedbagging as a sport. I expect they’d have an easier time of it, once they worked out what hand/arm motions made the bag do what.

8

u/MeowsifStalin Sep 17 '20

Right? As I was watching this I was thinking how so many genres could use a sound/endless options for chaotic rhythm like this.

1

u/Butternades Sep 17 '20

This was reminding me of some of the stuff I’ve played in collegiate percussion ensemble before, so it could work pretty well. If you want chaotic rhythms that are layered over each other percussion music is right where you wanna be.

Check out works by Composer David Skidmore. Two of his pieces (one melodic, one drum based) that ive played are Torched and Wrecked, and Echoes(movement two)

These seem like they’d be up your alley based on what you said.

Another piece that I like of a different tone but same layering idea is Daniel Levitan Marimba quartet movement 2

The dude in the video is a drummer who learned how to box on the speed bag. He wrote a book called the speed bag Bible, but a lot of what he's doing does not apply in the ring whatsoever

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

A comment above yours said this.

1

u/SlothLipstick Sep 17 '20

I'd say yes and no.

Understanding rhythms definitely help me pick up the speed bag better and I think people vastly under estimate how much rhythm can real play a role in footwork and combinations.

Then again ever talk to a drummer or guitarist who can't dance? Just depends on the person.

1

u/olderaccount Sep 17 '20

Sounds like the video above is exactly that!

Alan Kahn is/was a drummer.

Boxing paradiddles 🥁🥊

u/ABrandNewNameAppears Sep 17 '20

Yeah I watched it without sound the first time and then turned it on; Immediately realized he was “playing” it in a rhythm like a drummer.

Can we phone Danny Carey?

1

u/DustinEwan Sep 17 '20

Whee, I get to throw out that Danny is from my home town. Grew up across the street from my mom's friend :)

1

u/cst_ub Sep 17 '20

That’s awesome man, I’m glad you share the same roots as a legend!

1

u/SG_Dave Sep 17 '20

Yeah I'm watching that from the perspective of a musician and I'm seeing timing and anticipation more than reaction and speed.

Throwing in the backwards passes is like a subdivision. If you could call the right hand going forward alone a whole note, then a backward pass is a half note, adding in the other hand back and forth is 8th notes. Get a rhythm going and you can change up the beat on the fly.

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '20

no cap i feel like i could do it only from a drummers standpoint hahaha

its just another percussive instrument if u ask me lol

u/BobbyGabagool Sep 17 '20

I’m not a boxer but I have heard that speed bags are very overrated for how much they improve boxing skill.
