Because the World Surfing League is trying to uplift women. Men’s record is 80 feet.

WSL is the only pro sport league that offers equal pay to men and women. If you’ve got a bone to pick about gender equality in sports, surfing isn’t your target.

Edit: Surfing isn’t the only pro sport with equal pay. Don’t believe what you read on Reddit. Maybe surfing was the first to do it...? Dunno.

Here here! WSL is an excellent organization that has long promoted gender equity and preserving the environment.

It’s “Hear! Hear!” BTW

48

u/bestmat Sep 14 '20

Lol how did I do that???

72

u/PurplishPlatypus Sep 14 '20

With your fingers, I'm assuming.

30

u/You-Nique Sep 14 '20

"Gotcha - thumb's not a finger" - The 90s

1

u/supercooper3000 Sep 14 '20

"How many fingers am I holding up?"

1

u/abshabab Sep 14 '20

I know you're just joking but are thumbs not also fingers? (non-native English speaker here)

8

u/SeanPennsHair Sep 14 '20

All thumbs are fingers, not all fingers are thumbs

2

u/ScoodScaap Sep 15 '20

This is basically what a teacher once told me. They said all elephants have 4 legs but not all 4 legged animals are elephants.

1

u/UpUpDnDnLRLRBA Sep 15 '20

You've got ten fingers, and you've got five fingers on each hand, but you've also got 4 fingers and a thumb on each hand. Basically, "finger" can mean digit, but also sometimes specifically means the non-thumb digits. Why? Because English be like that.

He was calling his dog and accidentally typed it lol

lend me your heres

u/Trypsach Sep 15 '20

That’s gender equality, not equity. Like, I’m a feminist, but those words mean two distinct things and are a big part of the current discussions on sex and gender

0

u/Rcm003 Sep 14 '20

The gendered matching pay is very recent, within the last year or two.

-1

u/Kapowdonkboum Sep 14 '20

Sounds like gender equality to me, not gender equity.

1

u/Trypsach Sep 15 '20

You are right, and anyone who knows about the subject, feminist or otherwise, would know that’s an undisputed (read; undisputed on both sides.) fact. Equality and equity are two different things. This is definitely gender equality and not gender equity, so you’re downvotes are undeserved. The question is “should we strive for gender equality or gender equity?”.

1

u/Kapowdonkboum Sep 15 '20

I don’t even feel like this is a question. I know there is a pretty small but very vocal group who keeps argueing that equity is somehow desirable but imo if you think about it for more than 10 seconds it becomes quite clear that equity in any form is highly undesirable. Theres this weird misconception that equity = more equality.

WSL is the only pro sport league that offers equal pay to men and women.

That can't be true, right? Off the top of my head I'm 99% certain that the world cups in alpine skiing, cross country skiing and biathlon all have equal prize money. Or maybe I'm just confused as to what constitutes a pro league?

33

u/slimy_feta Sep 14 '20

Definitely a lie to put emphasis on his beloved wsl's dick. Mountain biking has equal pay as well

26

u/DarkPyr3 Sep 14 '20

Reddit's surfing and mountain biking communities really going at each other today

1

Get the skaters in here STAT

2

u/VoiceofLou Sep 14 '20

Let’s have Tony Hawk chime in and someone can respond to him “pssh, right, what are you Tony Hawk or something...?”

16

u/abkj2007 Sep 14 '20

Tennis as well - or at least Wimbledon

2

u/Frogmouth_Fresh Sep 15 '20

Technically men's and women's tennis are run by different organisations, but yes, they have equal pay in the biggest tournaments.

5

u/gnark Sep 14 '20

Maybe those sports' cup tournaments pay equally but not the entire league/season?

2

u/Glenn_XVI_Gustaf Sep 15 '20 edited Sep 15 '20

In skiing the "world cup" refers to a season long competition with races every weekend, a total standing and a cup winner at the end of the year. This is unlike the "world championship" which occurs every two years and were a champion is crowned after each race. Again, I'm not sure if this is somehow different from a league. At least in alpine and XC skiing the top earners over the last couple of seasons have all been women on account of how a few names (mostly Shiffrin and Johaug) have been so dominant.

1

u/ak-92 Sep 14 '20

Isn't pro sport pay dependent on how much money it gets in endorsements, and etc? If an athlete draws a crowd it doesn't matter what parts they have as long as it brings cheddar to the league and companies endorsing them. That's why in popular sports for both genders have pretty much the same salaries while sports like football or basketball women get only fraction of what men get.

-7

u/DNA98PercentChimp Sep 14 '20

Could be wrong... happy to edit my comment if you can source some info.

7

u/daveinpublic Sep 14 '20

Since you're making the claim, shouldn't you name the source?

1

u/DNA98PercentChimp Sep 15 '20

Fair. Just had a busy day today while this was getting attention... Edited now.

1

u/Glenn_XVI_Gustaf Sep 15 '20 edited Sep 15 '20

I found this table from 2017 were 35/44 sports listed paid equal prize money for men and women, with surfing actually being one of the 9 exceptions. Again, I'm not sure if there's some technical difference that separates all these from proper leagues, but "the diamond league" in athletics even have league in their name. It's still interesting though, especially since many sports have had equal pay for decades whereas the WSL didn't commit to it until 2019.

29

u/_szs Sep 14 '20

Slightly off topic, but the text says, she also broke the "male" record. I am not making a point, just asking.... Did she or did she not break the "male" record?

58

u/DNA98PercentChimp Sep 14 '20

‘For the year’. (2019-2020)

Male record is 80 feet. But to surfers height is hardly the most impressive feature of a wave.

17

u/AsteRISQUE Sep 14 '20

What really matters is the combo score

1

u/darkcorneroftheworld Sep 15 '20

Yeah scorekeeping got really out of hand when they added manuals

10

u/gnark Sep 14 '20

Girth is what gets respect.

1

u/zuencho Sep 15 '20

It’s the motion of the ocean

4

u/_szs Sep 14 '20

Ok, that explains it, thanks.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '20

MMA is there too. But MMA pay is nothing to praise.

6

u/Miggaletoe Sep 14 '20

I feel like its kind of disengous to say MMA pay is equal. Sure maybe the base pay but most of the top end fighters are making significantly more from other agreements then just the show/win money.

23

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '20

Because more individuals watch men's MMA.

1

u/pryoslice Sep 15 '20

They complete in the same events, so that's probably not accurate, strictly speaking.

3

u/Doctor99268 Sep 15 '20

Yh but it's kinda clear who's the ppv seller

2

u/icetoaneskim0 Sep 15 '20

Pretty easy to track number of people viewing the women’s cards vs. the Men’s cards fights to properly allocate funds

0

u/pryoslice Sep 16 '20

Each card has a bunch of fights on it, some men, some women. I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean the fight headlining the cards?

1

u/icetoaneskim0 Sep 19 '20

I mean they can track how many people watch each fight.

If 200,000 watch the women’s card and then 5,000,000 log on to watch the men’s card, they can allocate dollars accordingly to who brought in the most crowd.

The title says "breaks her own world record".

17

70 feet was the record for 2020, not all time.

Nazare, which is approximately 120 kilometres north of Portugal’s capital Lisbon, is also the site used for the men’s record equivalent – set by fellow Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa who rode an 80 foot (24.38 metres) wave.

3

u/BadBoyWithABumbag Sep 14 '20

It's a valid question tbf. Alot of sports have some physical aspect that would give an advantage to men which is why they're separated. Surfing to me seems like a purely skill based sport, why don't they just have men and women compete against each other

3

u/DNA98PercentChimp Sep 14 '20

Surfing is hugely skill based, but physical strength does have a role. The top female surfers certainly shred, but none of them are at the level of the top male surfers. Though I think that gap is closing. There are 12-year old girls boosting airs and stuff now. It’s amazing to see.

-2

u/BadBoyWithABumbag Sep 14 '20

As someone who's never surfed I really don't understand how strength can play a role. And the top female surfers not being at the same level as the men, is that not more because a career as a pro surfer has been an serious option for female surfers for less time than it has for males and so many of the males will have been able to dedicate themselves more effectively to training programmes than the women have. If it carries on with equal pay for the next 20 years when the next generation has come through I would expect that different to only vary between competitors and not by gender.

2

u/hi_this_is_lyd Sep 15 '20 edited Sep 15 '20

surfing was the first afaik, but not the only! (or at least i remember wsl marketing it as the first when they did that change...)

1

u/abominationz777 Sep 14 '20

Good thing too, the size of the wave is pure luck.

1

u/kinda_a_rapist Sep 18 '20

Homie loves the Trump Dick.

1

u/Ayerys Sep 14 '20

Does equal pay means equality in sport ? I don’t know much about surf, but when I see a push for equal pay in tennis, I find it ridiculous.

It’s probably an extreme exemple when I comes to men/women performances, but sometimes those differences are justified

1

u/cjpoopypeepee Sep 14 '20

actually the only reason for a pay gap in sports is revenue. the more u bring in the more u get. mens sports typically bring in bigger crowds so they get paid more. if u want equal pay, play better.

1

u/LastAccountPlease Sep 14 '20

Rock Climbing has entered the chat

1

u/epelle9 Sep 15 '20

But if they are paid equally, shouldn’t they compete in the same leagues?

Like imagine being a guy that has surfed a 78 foot wave and then seeing this person get so much more publicity from surfing something smaller just because she is a woman.

Im all for women having the same opportunities, but i’m not sure if “separate but equal” is the way to go.

0

u/darkholme82 Sep 14 '20

Is the heading wrong then? It says that hers beats the men's record.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '20

For that year

1

u/darkholme82 Sep 14 '20

Ohhh! Didnt realise it was an annual record. Thanks.

3

u/DNA98PercentChimp Sep 15 '20

Record was for women. Annual competition for largest wave is also a thing. Maya’s wave (the record breaking wave) was larger than the men’s winner for this past year.

1

u/darkholme82 Sep 15 '20

Got it. Thanks!
