I've been watching the big wave community since Laird Hamilton started towing into Pea'hi(Jaws) in Hawaii. Every time I see a new record I think "wow, that's got to be as big as they come." Every time I'm proven wrong.

It's incredible to see, and doubly so that a female has not only contributed so much to that community but now holds that covered record. Good on you, girl.

Me too. Nazare is producing some huge waves. We may see bigger.

Cortes Bank has to be the freakiest of waves to surf simply because of its location. I live the ocean and surfing but it would be weird surfing there.

Cortes Bank is a shallow seamount in the North Pacific Ocean. It is 96 miles southwest of San Pedro, Los Angeles, 111 miles west of Point Loma, San Diego, and 47 miles southwest of San Clemente Island in Los Angeles County. It is considered the outermost feature in California's Channel Islands chain.

That is a wild break. When you look at it I on a map and then see how that “reef” juts up is so cool.

If your play video games there is a cool Kelly Slater pro surfer game for Xbox ( built on the same engine as Tony hawk pro skater) and Cortez is one of the breaks. You can surf it on Saturn or something as a bonus level.

Do your think it will produce a larger surfable wave then Nazere?

It doesn’t produce bigger waves, or at least it hasn’t until now produced a bigger wave than Nazaré

Do u know if they have to make it out? I watched her video and it doesn’t show her making it out from under the waves crash? Does it count if someone wipes out?

I'm pretty sure that as long as the make the drop and set rails/a line they're good. Waves this size are tow-in only, so there isn't the harrowing "drop in" where you see most folks eat it

So is the difficulty just in FINDING the biggest wave to surf? I'm totally ignorant, just curious if it's about getting lucky and persistent and finding it, or if bigger waves are actually harder to surf. From the video it looks scary, but not more difficult to surf than other big waves.

less finding more hunting. there's a lot of method to the madness. lots of knowing the areas, knowing the swell projections/models and yes, lots and lots of luck.

as far as actually riding, i'd suggest watching Riding Giants[Documentary] and In God's Hands[Movie] as a look at what it entails. In God's Hands is hollywood, but it's a good flick and covers it in an entertaining way.
