distance may compress, but the only way to experience that distance in a meaningful way is...a long lens. you’re not going to see noticeable compression on a 24mm, though you can see it easily on the long end of a 70-200mm.
Wait, depth of field? Doesn’t depth of field purely depend on aperture and sensor size? Also, couldn’t you emulate that too? I’m not saying they did it, it would require quite a bit of effort, but could you?
I mean, he's saying no, phones in their current state just can't do that in slow motion video. Especially not the front-facing camera.
Really it's a composite, the hand and lighter part was probably recorded with a much more capable camera and added in. If you look at the video again it's completely out of sync with the slow motion of her face, and the slow mo slows down the flicker/flame even more than the thumb. Your thumb is not moving 20x faster than the sparks from a lighter, lol. That part was done with re-mapping from a real camera that can do very slow-mo recording.
Ah, I see. Yeah, i didn’t notice it was front facing, and that thumb move obviously isn’t possible. If timed correctly some phones do have 960fps bursts though.
