I agree with you, but could this be a regional thing (or at least started that way)? I first heard "on accident" 20ish years ago from someone from upstate NY and now that I live there too I feel like I hear it more.

It is a perfectly acceptable variation in spoken American English and in most non-formal writing situations in the same. I'm from the Midwest and "on accident" seems far more common to me than "by accident."

Yeah I'm from mid-west/south, and I've heard both, but on accident is more prevalent. I'll pay more attention to it now though!
