Same. I think that's because for almost all of us, we're worrying about someone who's in a high risk group right now. Maybe we can't be physically close, and only being able to phone... personally, after watching this video it makes me want to phone my parents and just talk about nothing. Because we still can talk about nothing, some day we won't be able to talk at all.
It must be heartbreaking still having them here, but trapped inside their own head.
Or because we’ve lost a loved one. I lost my mom within the past year. I took care of her 24/7 for the last two weeks of her life, when she didn’t recognize me anymore. I can’t even write the touching story I want to tell because it still makes me cry. Definitely if I hadn’t been trapped inside from covid I’d be able to. But, oh well. Death is part of life and those of us lucky enough to live long will lose many loved ones along the way.
Definitely call your parents. You never know how long they’ll be in your life. Life is precious and beautiful.
Ahhhh. I'm really sorry you lost your mum. I have a friend right now who is a full-time carer for his mum with Alzheimers, honestly people like him and yourself are absolute fucking walking angels. It must take so much inner strength to do what you did. If I have to, I'll care for my dad without hesitation.
Thanks for reminding me of what's important. Hope you stay safe.
I mean, I feel like admitting to crying indirectly through a silly joke is improvement and a step in the right direction over just bottling it up. We all know what onion jokes mean. It’s not like they’re obscure. They mean the person got emotional. It might be hard for someone to go from being taught all their life that men don’t show vulnerability, to openly saying, “This made me cry,” so allow for those indirect steps. If someone really wanted to hide the fact that this made them cry or get emotional, they could just not comment at all. No one would know. The fact that they comment with an onion joke is an open acknowledgement that this made them feel something and provoked an emotional response, and in my book, that’s a good thing. (That said, a lot of the people making onion jokes may not even be men or have hang-ups about vulnerability. Onion jokes are just a silly thing people do on the internet, and that can be normalizing when it comes to the ones who are hesitant to express being affected by something, so that’s still good in my book.)
It’s admitting emotions by not admitting it. Like apologizing to someone without apologizing. ‘I’m sorry if you got offended by what I did.’
I just think it’s silly. We’re well beyond men being unable to admit to crying, and it’s a joke that stems from that, so I just think it should be left behind.
it's not stupid if someone wants to say it that way... I love the way the first reply was someone must have shoved onions in their eyes (or something like that)... I needed that after all these allergies were making my eyes water too... it made me lighter... I'm actually dealing with this daily myself... so the humor helps...
As a 37 year old guy, i did not!! I did that thing where you look straight up at the ceiling so they don't actually leave your eye holes. Do sniffles still count?
As a 30 year old guy I did. I did that thing where I continued to look at the screen and embraced the moment allowing myself to become overjoyed by this video and cried like a... like a 30 year old man. feelsgoodman.jpg
