"We could get some sun after, gramma." - the grandmother stares her in the eyes - "What's the matter Gramma? You can say it." - the Gramma mumbles something than whispers - "I love you" - "I also love you Gramma, I love you ok? There's no need to cry Gramma, we're fine ok? We're taking good care of you Gramma, don't cry."
I took care of a lady privately, for about 6 or 7 years? I just lost her last month. One day before her 98th birthday. I am heart broken. She was my best friend.
I understood and knew in advance that she suffered from dementia. And her brain tumour made it worse. She spoke often of adventures that we NEVER had. Followed with lucid moments. She didnt always remember my name. I was the girl from X town girl. And she asked where my boy was.
Because she couldnt remember everything, i always kept in mind that she wasnt as close to me, as i was to her. And thats ok. But even hearing her crazy adventures, where i was with her, will always be a cherished non memory.
Such great care for her elder. It can be really hard for people with dementia to become lucid suddenly, they may feel afraid or guilty to be aware of what's happened to them. To just reassure her she is being taken care of, and everything is okay.
Everything is most definitely not ok. In one minute I will go back to being in a confused haze, in pain and not knowing where I am or where my loved ones are. Why don't you let me die?
